Red hair experts, cosmetologists, help?

posted 9th Jul '12
I dyed my hair red last night. I had to bleach my previously dyed dark hair that I had left alone for almost a year. The roots came out nice and I wasnt worried about an overall even tone as the red would pick up on the orange etc. I knew the ends would be too dark if I applied the red but I didnt wanna leave the house like that so I just dyed it and of course the red came out great on top but the ends are dark red. How can I lighten the ends to match the top? Would I have to strip the red then re bleach ? I texted my stylist today but im getting frantic....i want to fix it asap. It doesnt look bad its just not the color I wanted I smurfed up lol

I would suggest stripping only the bottom half of your hair and then dyeing the color you want without bleaching. Bleaching after stripping literally MELTED my hair some years ago.

But...roots will always turn out lighter than ends. I'm not sure why..They just always do. Just sometimes they turn out to where you can't really tell.

Thanks,.it makes sense. Im a little apprehensive because I have tried a stripper before and it did nothing on black hair. But would the stripper lighten the hair or just remove the red? When I first bleached it was a dark brown. Im thinking I have to bleach it lighter to an orange and then red.

You can try to strip out that color with dye remover and redye with a color 1-2 shades lighter than your intended color but in the same tone.
You can bleach the ends to a pale yellow and then redye them the same color.

Either way it will be a two step process. I personally prefer bleaching over stripping because I've found that the stripped hair sometimes reverts back to a darker shade after the color has been taken out.

I prefer bleaching too. The red I used was a very intense bright red, the best one ive seen so there is no other shade lol. I think im gonna strip the red then re bleach then add the red again? Or should I bleach the ends and then just re dye?

I would just bleach it out, you may have to do the bleaching twice but I wouldn't use stripper then bleach it could make your ends really gummy.

I know this is ridiculous but I need it perfect by friday lol. Im gonna bleach the ends, and see what happens. Im scared lol god its gonna be a big time consuming mess. Would it even lighten since when I.bleached it yesterday it was like a dark brown. Im worried about the red bleaching out and then it still being that ugly brown?

If you leave ir on long enough it will bleach all the color, you have to wait til it gets to the color of a banana lol. On my hair it takes sometimes up to an hour.

I did a strand test and it came out like an orangish color. I may bleach all yhe ends twice and then add the red again.

I've had to do that before when I had a reddish brown in my hair and wanted platinum blonde. Red is notoriously hard to get out. Good luck, you should post pics when you are finished, I'd like to see the end result!

Ok I will lol I bleached after doing a strand test yesterday and I didnt wanna push it to the point of breakage so I put in some conditioner repair and I may even buy some coconut oil since it feels a bit damaged. I will probably leave it overnight then let it air dry tomorrow and if its lighter I will put the red again and just let the ends grow out until my virgin hair keeps growing and dying it eventually it will all by a uniform.color lol

Good idea!

I really like Moraccan Argan Oil for damaged hair, have you ever tried that? It was the only reason I could brush my hair easily after bleaching it several times in the same day lol
