Has anyone had to have an abortion due to...

Medical reasons? I don't know if there is already a thread about this but just wondering. I had an abortion back in November because my little boy was very sick and had no chance of survival. And as I read some threads I haven't found any where they terminated due to the baby being ill and just wondering if anyone has and if they were able to get pregnant again and carry a baby to term?

I didn't have to abort, but I know a friend that did. She went on to have a healthy baby boy.

There is hope. Her issue was genetic and then she had a healthy boy. If you're worried you can go to a genetic counselor to be sure. But I can say from experience that sometimes bad things happen and they are just flukes.

I'm not sure, I think they would. I saw on a show where this girl found out at 5 months pregnant that she was losing her baby and there was nothing she could do about it. She had to have surgery or something, I believe.

I had an abortion in 2005 due to medical reasons. I was diagnosed with epilepsy in 1993 and was on several different medications. I was told that because of the strength of the medication that the baby would have NO CHANCE at survival and would most likely end in miscarriage anyway.

Medical reasons for just the kid, or the mother too? I aborted because of my own medical reasons. I probably won't be able to have kids again though.

But there is a message board I know about that is specifically for abortion support and there is a sub forum for those who terminated because of medical issues. Many woman there had healthy pregnancies after they aborted. If you want that link message me, as I won't publicly post it.

Ok just to set up why I asked that question is because my son WAS sick. His skull never closed from his forehead to the middle of his head so that caused all of his brain fluid to collect in a sac on his head. I can't Remeber what they called it but I read about it and the research I read said that babies with that problem do not usually live through the birthing process or if they do make it they live for a day up to a month if they make it. He also had a hole in his heart a severe cleft pallet and the severest form of spina bifda (sp?). I also do not believe in abortion myself unless it is due to rape, medical issues but I also do not judge someone if they have had one because they were not ready or just didn't want it. My husband and I had three opinions on our son and they were all the same. The other problems we could have dealt with and would have loved him no matter what his special needs may have been but the brain fluid leaking was something we could not have handled. Meaning I could not have went thru the whole pregnancy feeling him move (which thankfully my husband and I did get to feel twice) and then him passing away at the end. I am a strong woman but I know in my heart that I could not have handled losing him at the end neither could my husband. The doctors even said that if I would have went full term if that sac would have broke it could have made me severely ill. So yeah I am asking if you had to abort due to the health of yourself and baby. Thank you to those that have been kind about this I was just curious cause sometimes I feel like I'm the only one.

personally i have not had an abortion due to this, but i can give some hope. both sperm and egg go through very complicated procesess before they reach the final stages of development, all it takes is one mistake. one little gene, and anything can happen. it is said that everyone on the planet has about three deadly diseases that they carry but are inert because they are recessive. there is a prominent rate of failure in copying genes and splicing, usually causing termination prior to the parent finding out. sometimes its not that severe, and the fetus can grow in the womb but can never survive outside, which was your case.
my dads GF had a blighted ovum, it broke her heart. she has gone on to have other children. honestly, things like this are sadly common. i would follow the other posters advice and talk to a genetic counselor.
they can look at the make up of you and your SOs DNA and tell you if you both have one of those diseases, if you both do then the odds are higher that it will happen again, but not generally 100% still because you would both have the dominant-not sick gene.
it may also have just been a fluke, like i said a lot of things can go wrong in cell reproduction, before or after conception. i would say that the fact that it wasnt something directly caused by you, like a weak cervix or whatever, then the odds are much better that it was a fluke

I've never had an abortion.... but I was advised to because my baby was also very sick... I took it into consideration but decided it wasn't for me. But they told me that if I decided to do it I would be able to have more children. My little girl had half a heart, cystic hygromas and fluid throughout her entire body. She was diagnosed with turners syndrome. She was a stillborn at 25 weeks. I know how hard it is to carry a sick child knowing they aren't going to make it. And I know what you are going through. You can still have children no matter what the outcome is. I wouldn't worry about what other people say. Its your choice. Me personally I know this sounds crazy but I would do it all over again. I got to spend all the time I wanted with my little girl and although I had to say goodbye I wouldn't trade those moments for anything. My baby died in november of 2011. And I am now 29 weeks pregnant today. Good luck and God Bless!!!!
