Vaccinations & welfare.

posted 11th May

I was watching the news this morning, & there was a story about the MMR. How some parents are still refusing the MMR even though it has been proven "perfectly safe."

Over here, they are now saying that if your child is not vaccinated, they will not be able to go to school. They will also withdraw any welfare/benefit that you are on, if you fail to get your child immunized.

MP's are still saying that vaccines are"voluntary", but critics of the new scheme are debating otherwise. If your child will not be allowed into a school, & welfare withdrawn from those who claim it .. you hardly have any choice but to get your child vaccinated.

& after all, it's not just parents on welfare that are weary about the MMR. So is this just a unrealistic attempt to force parents into making the "right" choice?

I'm all for vaccines, but I think this idea is ridiuclous.

I agree. I get my kids vaccinated but I don't think it's fair to punish the people who choose not to. That's a bunch of bullshit.

It should be a parent's choice, and I apologize for any typos but i'm typing with wet nails...but i mean you're the primary caregiver for this child and they're your responsibility. If you choose to not get them vaccinated against certain things it should be alright as long as you can live with whatever possible consequences might come.

Seems a little bit pushy,to me. If they consider an unvaccinated child to be at risk, why on Earth would they further endanger that child by pulling it's means of support?

I assume they'd see it as; no parent would let it go that far. They'd get their child vaccinated before the welfare was withdrawn.

And they'd probably be right.I doesn't seem fair though, how are they planning to punish the parents who don't use welfare, just to make sure everyone's being treated fairly?

It's like taking away a freedom :-)

Thats stupid. Here in the states they want you to get your kids vaccinated for school, but I think that there are ways around it.

Its just an attempt of our government to take away more of our freedom. As a parent they make us feel guilty if we choose not to, when It should be the parents choice not the government. If a vaccine protects children from getting diseases, then it would be the unvaccinated child that is at risk, if parents want to make that choice to protect them from something else, then it should be their choice. If it is safe..then why do they make you sign a waiver anytime you vaccinate. I know here they do. Personally, they cant make you do anything, and if I decided not to get my kids vaccinated..and they tried to pull something like my kids not going to public school..it would be my kid at risk not the others...so it should be the parents choice..wouldnt make too much sense if they arent protecting the majority on that one.

Depending on what the vaccinations are for I guess. I know in my workplace only the permanant staff get free flu vaccinations yearly but that means that all the contractors don't get vaccinated and we all get sick   What's the point of only vaccinating some for flu, I ask? I think that the welfare thing is too pushy but I do believe private schools should have the right to request all children be vaccinated. Then at least there are still options for those who don't want to. There will always be private schools who would not choosed to adopt the policy as well. I would rather send my kid to a school knowing all the kids were vaccinated against cooties and other awful childhood ailments...

Good question though Amy, good question.

With me I had no choice but to wait on my kids'shots. If they were imunized before the age of 5 they would have severe reactions including high fever and convulsions. The public schools here gave me a lot of trouble where as the private schools were more understanding.

I plan on not vaccinating my child, and because of Florida's law "No Shots, No School, No Kidding" I have to homeschool him... Not that I really mind, its just another step in keeping my familys life our control, and not the governments.
I've been looking for pediatricians that will even take my kid lol, but the second I mention that I don't want him vaccinated, I've actually been yelled at and called a bad parent because I don't want my child loaded up with that crap.
I don't let it affect me, but you'd figure someone who's job it is to care for the health of children would understand my concern...
But No, they're just looking for the money they recieve from every vaccinations they dish out, and thats just sad.

Yes, it is an attempt to force parents into an unwanted medical procedure which has yet to be proven safe. It's bullshit.

If you seek government assistance, you have to qualify for the requisites they set forth. Just like to qualify for WIC, you have to take a breastfeeding class, even if you are formula feeding. (At least that's what they do at our local WIC). If you are seeking a service that is giving you stuff, you can't really complain about the guidelines they set forth.

I'm not saying it's necessarily right, but it's something they can do.

Look at it like this: People think that the government is taking rights away. They might be, but they are also protecting their own asses. What if a horrible outbreak of measles broke out in our country (in epic proportions). The citizens would immediately turn to the government and demand answers and treatment. I see it as a way of insurance on their behalf. The government is screwed no matter what stipulations they put forward.
