What age did your child float/swim in the water?

posted 4th Jul '12
Just curious as to when your child starting swimming and floating in the water. Coralynn will be 4 next month and she learned how to swim underwater for about 6 secs or so. But we are having a hard time with her floating on her back in the water.

My boy who will be 3 in August just learned how to swimm by himself. He can only make it for about 3 breaths but I feel so relieved. With this being said we live in Costa Rica so he pretty much grew up in the pool.

Coralie is 4 and she can swim (dog paddle). She refuses to go underwater. She won't let water touch her face, it's a sensory thing

She tries to float but can't. I think she gets scared. She won't lay all the way back, even if I am holding her up

G is sort of a freak of nature. He's been swimming well since about 2- 2 1/2.He's been going under for a few seconds here and there since about then as well. He just turned 4 & is full on swimming now. Granted we live in FL & have a pool, so he's been in the water almost every day. Plus, I was so worried about drowing that it was a priority to work with him regularly. I need to work more with him on floating on his back. He'll do it, but he needs to do it more.

13 m and 14months. My kids have been in swimming since 4 months old. My 4 yr old is in a class with 8-10 yr Oldsmobile. And my 10 yr old is doing life saving skills. My 5 month old starts lessons in September. I had to wait with her due to they close for the summer. And it starts at 4 months

B is 2 1/12 and this summer just started going underwater by herself. Before then we just dunked her. She is all over the place now, going under water. Were still working on kicking and pulling water with her arms. I hope by the end of the summer she has a good grasp on it.

Hope she does ok....swimming lessons include just taking your child and throwing them under the water and letting them pop back up on their own.

My kids started at 4 months. They do the same you hold onto your baby blow in their face and when they hold their breath and close their eyes you shove them underwater and let them pop back up. Its so fun and they love it so much...well mine did anyways lol good luck.

I teach them to swim from 2 on. No floaters or safe suits or anything.

We have a pool and live along a river. Competence in swimming, swimming in MOVING water, is a necessity around here. Our kids have to demonstrate that they can swim in moving water and not go under before they can leave our garden and go play, so they're very motivated by about 4 years and on, LOL!
