9 month old & eggs...

posted 4th Jul '12
So my doctor told me to start giving Zoey "proteins". She's 9 months old and has 4 teeth so she can't exactly chew most of the proteins adults do. One idea she gave me was egg yolks. She said just the yolks, but not the whites. I made this for her this morning and she HATED it. Literally looked at me like I was evil for giving her something so gross.

She's had scrambled eggs before and loves them. But...scrambled eggs have the whites in them. Mostly I'm just curious...what's so bad about the whites? Is it gunna hurt her or is it just not a "nutritious" as the yolks? I just don't wanna hurt her or her belly.

She can gum anything as long as its tender. Their gums are hard, they can eat meats.

I thought for allergy reasons they weren't supposed to have eggs or peanuts.

The whites have a strain of complete protiens that can penetrate the stomach lining and may cause siliac disease.

Do you have a slow cooker? It is an easy way to cook meat so that it is nice and tender. I have my LO chicken, beef, lamb and turkey when she had only 4 teeth. I just cut it into small shreds. You can also use ground meat and make patties.

I make super patties for snacks with organic ground turkey, egg yolk, cooked oats, shredded carrot, peas, and ground flax seeds. I mix it up and roll it into balls then squish them into patties and bake on a cookie sheet. My daughter still loves them! (This is my recipe but you can put almost anything in them!)

I'm still a bit nervous with the meats. She won't just choke on them, even if it's little? I realize she can chew stuff with her gums, she does it all the time but is any meat safe to give to her then?

I don't know, I think I'll just stick with scrambled eggs for a while. All this makes me nervous. I'm a first time mom so forgive me, lol.

egg whites are known to have allergens in them. My son would throw up when we first started giving him eggs. But now that he has grown and stomach matured a little he can eat them no problem

Thanks for answering the actual question! Much appreciated! I think she's okay since she's eaten scrambled eggs 2-3 times and never had any problems. Good to know.

All you can do is try. By 9 months, my kids were eating all types of cooked meats, chicken and beef mostly. No seafood though.

Eggs are a possible allergen. A lot of people are allergic to eggs. The white is usually what causes the trouble. So that's why egg whites are on the "high allergen food wait til after age 1" list.

Can't you scramble just the yolks though?

ETA: I see I just repeated what someone else posted. Hate it when that happens.

I was always told egg yolks only. BUT, if she's already had scrambled with the white, I'd just give her that.
I thought there was new research that said the entire egg was fine, but I could be wrong.

Probably, lol. I'm not the best cook. But for Zoey's sake I'm learning so I could try it!

There probably was. I think there's been lots of "recent discoveries" with stuff that at one point was thought to be awful for kids. I'll just stick with scrambled then. Maybe start incorporating real meat in small pieces too. I'm apparently behind on this, lol. Or my doctor is just expecting me to learn all this myself.

First time parenthood is scary!
