Whole milk?

posted 3rd Jul '12
My daughter turned one on july 1st. She doesn't see the doctor until the 5th. I would like to try her on milk. So what milk should I use, like whole our 2 percent? and any tips for doing so. I'm nervous because her father is lactose intolerant. And he gets bad stomach pains, the runs, and sometimes throws up. Sorry for the tmi lol! Do you think there is any chance of her having the same problem?

Whole milk. They need the fat in it. And just mix some with formula, 1/3 milk and 2/3 formula, if she handles that good then go to 1/2 milk and 1/2 formula, then eventually just milk.

You won't know until you try, but it's best to ease into the switch... start mixing whole milk into her formula an ounce at a time, give that a couple days and then try 2 oz, and so on... just giving her a cup of whole milk will likely give her an upset stomach, lactose intolerant or not.
Definitely stick to whole until at least age 2, it's got all the fatty stuff her growing brain needs!

Thanks! So should I just mix her formula normally, then add some milk?

Whole milk until age 2. I just replaced a formula sippy cup(She had been off bottles already) with a whole milk sippy and slowly increased the whole milk sippies in the place of formula.

They usually only recommend that if the child has issues with whole milk.

I really don't believe children need cow's milk, it's a marketing gimmick from the dairy industry. Cow's milk really isn't that good for you.

In some ways it really isn't, but the fat in whole milk is good for brain development from 1-2 years of age.
