vitamin drops for breastfeeding?

posted 2nd Jul '12
Has anyone else used these? LO's doctor called today and said they forgot to prescribe her vitamin drops at her first appointment and would be sending the prescription to the pharmacy for me. She said they recommend them for all breast fed babies. Just curious as I've never heard of them before.

My pedi suggested them but I declined. I live in Florida and my LO gets plenty of Vit. D from the sun.

never used them with my first and was also told we needed to give them vitamin d drops (since they don't get vitamin d in breastmilk) but you can take your kid out in the sun for 10 to 15 mins and their bodies will absorb more vitamin d than any drop will do. I didn't do it again with this child. I did my own research on this subject and think giving them these drops are pointless.

Both my kids were prescribed vitamin drops but I never gave them to them. I don't think they need them, especially since I live in Alabama.

We used Vitamin D drops until LO was on formula. He was born at the end of the winter and around my area it's a common problem to have a Vitamin D deficiency. My levels were a little low so they gave them to me.

Yea, it's iron drops. My pedi said "BF babies don't get much iron thru BM. Lots of BF babies become anemic."

My doctor hasn't said anything to me about them & my daughter has been BF for almost 3 months now.

Quoting Rhia Leigh:" Has anyone else used these? LO's doctor called today and said they forgot to prescribe her vitamin drops ... [snip!] ... the pharmacy for me. She said they recommend them for all breast fed babies. Just curious as I've never heard of them before."

I did research and said no. Something about them causing kidney damage. You can just bring the baby out in the sun for a few minutes everyday.
