VSD open heart surgery

Anyone elses baby have this or had this? Just have some questions.

my baby has a different defect, but has had OHS twice now. hes 7 months old now and thriving. is there anything specifically i can answer for you?

How old when they did the surgery? I am just wondering if she will still need to be on meds after the surgery. They aren't gonna do it til she's around 4 to 6 months old. So she will need meds and oxygen, but I am wondering if she will still need it after.

is she in CHF?

my sons first surgery was at 10 days old. he was intubated and all that jazz until that point. he came home 8 days after only on lasix, which they weaned him off of, and then started back up about a month before his second sugery at 3.5 months. he was never on any oral heart med besides lasix.

she will probably be on meds coming home from surgery but they will wean her when her heart is ready. it takes awhile for their heart to get better after being "fixed"

she will not be on them for life tho

She's still in utero but she will be going to Shands at the University of Florida. It's in Gainesville. But no CHF. They really can't tell since she's still in the womb.

It's reassuring to hear she won't be on meds the rest of her life. That's what I was afraid of.

oh, didnt realize you were still pregnant   . alot of VSD/ASD babies go into congestive heart failure before surgery, its nothing to freak out about, its not like in adults, its easily reversed once their heart is fixed in kids. but no, its very unlikely she will need meds for the rest of her life. she will need to be followed by a cardiologist for the rest of her life tho.

It just worries me that they are waiting so long to do the surgery. It seems like something that should be fixed asap. The cardiologist said that since her blood will be mixing that it will cause her to have trouble breathing. So that really freaks me out.

yeah i really dont know WHY they wait, but they often wait for VSD/ASD type surgeries. but by the time the kid actually gets surgery, theyre usually in CHF and quite sick.

my sons defect is a type of defect that needs fixed in the first few weeks of life, so he had surgery at 10 days old, but i remember the inbetween time from his heart cath to his second surgery, the waiting is horrible :/

She also has a blockage in her intestines so she will need surgery for that. The cardiologist doesn't think it's that big of a deal to fix her heart first. She said she sees no problem with her having the blockage surgery before the heart. She said it's a pretty big hole too. I will take her somewhere else if she needs it.

we went to motts, which was #3 last year. boston and CHOP are great too.

I use all childrens hospital my daughter has 2 holes in her heart that they hope will close by the time she is 6 months. My dad has had 2 heart attacks my moms dad had one and died and my SO mom has heart problems so it all around will suck for my daughter... Hope ur little one will be okay, My obgyn was high risk but could not get views they needed on the eco so they sent me there to have them do them and im glad they did.

No I looked on the list for the highest rank hospitals for cardiology and Shands was the highest. I keep getting told I'm in good hands.

not true, top 5 is boston, chop, texas , motts and cincci. i gave you the list.
