17 month old haan't said one word

posted 1st Jul '12
My son doesn't say a thing. Everything is "baaaaah" or "yeeiish" which I think he is trying to say yes. I told his pediatrician that I was concerned and he said not to worry until he turns two. How old were your LOs when they said their first word?

Mine was about 5 months. She's always been a social butterfly though....

But, I really wouldn't worry about your son. I bet he's really active though. They say usually when a kid isn't talking much, they're really physically active and vice versa....He's going to turn 2 and just start talking in circles around you I bet

mine didn't really start saying words till 18-19 months. Before that she did say DADA and MAMA and KOKI(my dogs name) but nothing else. After her second birthday she got so much better with language...and now that sshes three....shes even better then before..I can't get her to shut up now   most the time she talks so fast i can't understand her

Maybe you should get a second opinion? All toddlers hit mile stones at different times but I would be worried that at 17 months he hasn't said a single word. That being said both of my kids talking was a bit behind and then BOOM..started talking out of nowhere. I still think at 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 they don't talk as well as they should but they also don't get a lot of interaction with other children.

my son said mama at 5 months when he would cry. or when he wanted me. hes 18 months now and says over 30 words. but i was the same way talking full sentences at 18 months. everyone develops at different times. he attempts to say yes so hes trying. have you sat down and said words or said can you say and then words like mamma or daddy?

thats how we have gotten our son to say multiple words. he even said his soon to be brothers name 2 days ago just asking him to say charlie. and he did. dont worry till after 2 if he isnt saying much. my neighbors son says like 5 words and just turned 2

Every baby is different. DD would say maybe 5 words, until she turned 2. Really and seriously what seemed like overnight, she started talking, real words, and has not stopped since. Sometimes I wish she would be quiet, tbh.. lol She would only mama, dada, up, milk, and sooth. Otherwise it was all babble until her 2nd birthday. that was also when she gave up her pacifier though, I hated that thing!

No problem. It's so funny because when someone mentions this issue with their kid, you ask if they're doing well physically or verbally, opposed to whatever they're having problems with they almost always say yes, lol. It's like whatever they are focusing on more, they are going to be wonderful at, and then the other thing is usually at a stand still.

But like another momma said, it's like once they hit 2 years old....they blow your mind with how much they really now and start doing...

Everyday I sit him down and say "Mama, can you say mama?" I always tell him what I'm doing, name everything I pick up, and I point to things and i'll ask what it is and everything is "baaaah"

its very possible he will just start talking over night. he might just be one of those silent learners that want to perfect his words before he speaks to you. if he gets to 2 and isnt saying at least i think its 7 words then i would talk to his dr again. but does he do other things like point to what he wants?

my grandmother just told me that my mom didnt walk till she was 2. or talk till nearly 3 i mean like talk talk she would say words like that and momma but she didnt actyally talk till later. thats because she was spoiled and gma just carried her and gave her what she wanted when she pointed lol.

But i do hope your little one talks soon to ease your mind.

He points at everything he wants and says "baaaah" and i'll ask him what he wants and he'll tug on his hair and scream a little and point and continuously say "baah."
He was kind of a late walker as well. He would walk pretty good if I held one of his arms but he would stop if I let go until he turned 11 months he finally started walking and has been very active ever since.

see my son said momma early at 5 months and then he crawled at 5 months (army scoot) and then didnt walk till he was 14 months old. he was late to walk i walked at 10 months. so every kid is different. my son still points at stuff he can say the words to and says "whats that" well he knows he just wants it lol. one morning your going to wake up and poof hes going to be having conversations with you. lol.

oh my son never says sentences either its one word mostly the word NO and DONT lol. but he just began babbling when he wants to talk to you and making facial expressions and hand movements. my mom said this was what i did right before i started my sentences and really takling.

your boy should start talking soon if he babbles and looks at you and makes the expressions as well

My son is 18 months old and doesn't know many words. Does your son try to babble or just string together a bunch of jibberish? I think that's a good sign that he wants go communicate if he does... mine chatters a lot, but it's all nonsense stuff.

Mine makes a slurping sound instead of saying drink, says "t" instead of "eat", stuff like that. He loves to make animal noises also... I'm sure your son has ways of expressing himself, too.

Don't worry... before you know it, you won't be able to get him to keep quiet.
