Autism

posted 29th Jun '12
My nephew is 8 and has Autism.....he's being made fun of and his siblings are being pushed around by other kids. His sister is 7 and their younger brother is 5, my niece and younger nephew are being picked on because they have an older brother who is "special". We just found out that this is the reason why none of them wants to attend school......help? School is over now and we don't know what to do. :-( My niece is a 1st grader again she failed from lack of communication......

I can't view this without responding but I don't know what to say. That's awful, despicable...and my worst nightmare. This is my biggest fear as my children begin entering school! I mean, obviously you have to harass the school and make as many people aware as possible. Can their parents complain to the school, the teachers, the other parents? Make the administration aware. You can even request that their school district pay to have the students sent to another district if it comes to that. Or to have the boy with autism sent to a private school that the district pays for. In that case you have to be relentless. In cases of bullying, and special needs accommodations the squeaky wheel is really the only one that gets oiled. If the boy has ESY this summer, the best place to start would be there with that teacher. If the parents are involved in any local support groups, ask the other parents if they have any advice or have had similar experiences. Most importantly, feel pity for yourself (or them) for a short time, and then quickly use that pain to be proactive!

The kids live in tne northeast district....this district doesn't care about anything we don't know what to do really, I mean this district is the one who had an Autistic child arrested. According to them there is no "proper proticall" for "handling" autistic children.

That's despicable! They have to draw attention to themselves....or move...or hire an advocacy lawyer! This is no time to be passive! Sitting around hoping things will change never create change. I wish I was more aware of the local district there, or state laws but I live in PA. Something certainly needs to change in this situation. If the district seems like they won't, then the child's family must do something.
