Labor & Delivery
posted 9th May
As days come nearer to my due date, which is August 1st, I can't help but remember my previous two deliveries. Both of which were natural, no drugs, and I plan to deliver this one naturally also.
With my first child, who was born 7 lbs 14 oz, my first contractions started at about 6 in the morning, as I was preparing breakfast for me and my husband. They were about 10-15 minutes apart and this having been my first pregnancy, I didn't think that I was in labor.
At about 7, 10 minutes after my husband left for work, I went to the bathroom to find that I was bleeding. Naturally I freaked out and called my OB, he told me to come in and go to the Women's Evaluation Clinic at the hospital. So I called my husband and told him to come back and that it was time to go.
When we arrived at the hospital about 1 hour later, I was checked in and measured to be 6 centimeters dilated. And the blood? It was what they call a mucous plug, or bloody show. Perfectly normal. They told me that I would be giving birth that day.
I was transferred to the labor and delivery room, where I was not making much progress. At around noon, my OB broke my water to make my contractions go faster and help progress my labor. Around 1 my contraction increased to 3-4 minutes apart. Around 6 my contraction increased to less than 1 minute apart and I began to push. I was pushing for 20 minutes. For the last 10 minutes screaming, "I can't, I can't!!" and my husband supporting me by saying, "Yes, you can! Yes, you can! I can see the head!"
With my second one, who was born 8 lbs 12 oz, my contractions started at about midnight. They were anywhere from 3 minutes to 10 minutes apart, I wasn't sure of what to do, so I decided to wait until they were more regular. So I folded my laundry as I sat on my exercise ball, which some how helped to ease the pain of the contraction by slightly bouncing on it.
By the time it was 2 in the morning they became more intense, but not any more regular. I called my sister-in-law and told her to come over because it was time for me go to the hospital. It took her about 35 minutes to get to my house, which gave me plenty of time to wake my husband and get ready.
As we were driving to the hospital, and it's a 40 minute drive, I began to have the urge to push. By the time we got to the hospital my contractions were 1-2 minutes apart and I was trying really hard not to push, even though my body wanted to.
When we came through the ER doors, I couldn't walk during the contractions and had to keep myself upright by holding onto the railing. There was another couple that came with us at the same time, she was still in the very early stages of labor and she was all smiles. I remember thinking, just you wait until the real pain comes. I guess when they saw me, they told the attendant at the front desk that I needed help. A nurse came to see what was going on and when he saw me holding on for dear life to the railing and moaning with pain, he ran and came back with a wheel chair.
He pushed me to the front desk where I was asked what I was doing there. I couldn't believe my ears! I mean there I was pregnant and almost screaming with pain, and she was asking me what I was doing there! So I told her that I was in labor and having the urges to push already. She asked me if I was full term, and when I said yes, she looked at me funny. That's how small I am when I'm pregnant, that even nurses don't believe me when I say I'm 9 months pregnant.
During the Q & A I had a contraction and told her that I wanted to push, she told me to cross my legs. As if that's going to keep the baby from coming.
I was brought to the labor and delivery room where I was helped to get out of my clothing. I lay down on the bed and the nurse checked my cervix, I was already 9 centimeters dilated.
The OB that was on call that night came in to check my progress about 10 minutes later, I was 10 centimeters and my water hadn't yet broken. She told me she was going to break it herself and as she pulled away to get her 'hook' I remember saying "I have to push!" and started pushing. The OB didn't have time to break my water. As if she was miles away, I could hear her telling me to give her a second push and that I would be done, I didn't believe her, but I pushed any way. When he was born she said, "Congratulation! It's a boy!" and all I could say was, "Are you kidding me?!" I pushed him out in 2 pushes. My son was born so fast, that the water sack never broke, he was born in it.
Now that I am pregnant again, naturally I am beginning to freak out. Even though people tell me that I had easy labors and deliveries, it still hurt! I recovered pretty easy after both deliveries, so I'm not too concerned about recovery. It's all the pain during the delivery that gets me nervous!
