would there even be such a policy???

"Tacoma Public School district spokesman Dan Voelpel told Yahoo! Shine that, according to statewide law, teachers are not allowed to apply sunscreen to students and students can only apply it to themselves if they have a doctor's note."

pardon??? this is probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard. One of her daughters has a form of Albinism and they were aware of that, still wouldnt let her apply any due to the policy. I'd break heads.

I mean I understand not letting the teacher put it on the child but not letting them put it on themselves???   Why not? That's weird..it's just sunscreen.

Why can't the children apply it to themselves? Is this school underground and sunblock wold be a waste of school money??????

Though sunblock is usually provided by the parents so even if it was an underground school if a student wanted to put it on who are they to say no? It's just sunblock.

Its because unfortunately nowadays they have to cover every corner of their butt. Some children are allergic to the contents of sunscreen so they are avoiding lawsuits there.

i guess some kids have the potential of being allergic to some sunscreens and they don't want to pose that risk. If anything it should more or less be the parents responsibility to send the child to school already wearing sunscreen..and if they need to reapply to send their own to school with them with a note. Maybe they can go to the nurses office to do it. I don't think its the teachers responsibility to keep up with that. Obviously they should be mindful of the sun they kid gets knowing they aren't wearing it though.

probably because people are so "sue-happy" now-a-days. some parent out there would probably (or maybe already has) sue the school for "putting chemicals" on their children or something...

I do think that it's a stupid law, but also... If her mother KNOWS that the kid has a form of albanism, why doesn't she have a doctor's note on file and why didn't she send her kid sunscreen on Sport's Day? Irresponsible IMO.

Most likely to cover their asses just like every other policy.

If a teacher applies it then their might be accusations of inappropriate touching or if the teacher didn't apply it correctly because the child still got sunburnt.

if the student applies it to themselves then they could share it with friends and if it turns out they have an allergic reaction then ultimately the teacher/school is in trouble.

There's a whole list of reasons so they school needs to have their ass covered.

The child should have stayed inside the school iif she knew she wasn't able to apply sunscreen.

When I was in school my classmate had a sun exposure disorder, when we had events outside his parents sent him to school in long pants and long sleeves with a hat. They tried to keep him in the shade as much as possible and if he became to hot or whatever he was given the option to go inside to the library.

The older children could apply it themselves but we couldn't put it on the younger ones.

If a teacher put their hands and rubbed lotion on my child, they wouldn't have hands. But you bet your ass my child will be able to apply it to herself, even if she has to go to the restroom to do so.

The things with the kids having it is there being an issue of them putting it on other kids or being mean and forcing it in their mouths or eyes...the possibilities are endless. I will just put it on my child before he goes to school.
