Folic Acid & TTC

Any of you TTC'ers have to take a very high dose of Folic Acid prior to conceiving???

I have a history of Neural Tube Defects ih pregnancies. My doctor told me for two months prior I'd have to take 4000mg of folic acid in addition to my prenatalsa day to help prevent another NTD.

If so how long were you on the folic acid supplement before you got pregnant?

Looks like the hubby and I will be trying again in July.

I had IVF in March...was told by my doctor to start Folic acid and Prenatals in Jan....

i have been talking it since jan but only cos i have been trying for a baby.

My best friend takes 4 mg for mood and energy. She hasn't had problems with neural tube defects but she continues to take them throughout her pregnancies.
Are you maybe mistaken on the amount? I know the RDA is 400 mcg (0.4 mg) 4000 mg looks liketoo huge an amount.

I've already had one child with a severe NTD so I have to be on a VERY high dose. Maybe he said 4 mg.... lol 4000 mg may be wrong. All I know is that it is a hell of alot more than the RDA.   I'm blonde...what can I say. HA

I was on 400 and my Dr said to take a prenatal with 800 in it hope this helps.

I'm not sure what dosage your dr wanted you on, but one thing to keep in mind is that sometimes you'll see it in micrograms and others in milligrams which can make a big difference. 400 micrograms (mcg) is the same as .4 milligrams (mg).

Thanks...I know I work in nursing..lol I just had a blonde moment and said 4000mg and I have no clue why. I just came off of Accutane and my brain cells are fried.

Yeah when my friend told me how much she was taking I thought that was really a lot but its doing you more good than harm and you can't OD on it because its water soluable and you'll just pee out the extra.

Two months sounds like a good amount of time for your body to take in as much as it can. Good luck, I hope you get your bfp in July.

I hope so too. The hubby and I have suffered through two losses. One at 16 weeks and one at 21. So hopefully everything goes well.

I have to take 5mg of folic acid daily, as well cartia low dose asprin and my normal prenatal pills, and it also looks from my bloods that I am low in iron so i need to start on iron tablets too. I'm a pill popping machine at the moment 

Woohooo Terra! I can't wait for you to start trying! I would say that it never hurts to take them. After we lost Hannah, I never stopped taking my prenatals.... I took generic until we were pregnant again and then I get the fancy ones with DHA. Good Luck!
