High back booster?

posted 29th Jun '12
DH just pointed out to me that my sons shoulders are getting very close to covering the top slot on his Graco nautilus. He will be 4 next week as is 42 lbs, 42 inches. I'm not in any hurry to convert him to the high back booster, I will leave him in it like it is until he outgrows it. I'm curious though about the differences between high back and backless boosters. I've never done much research on boosters (since it hasn't been applicable to us yet). His seat converts to bOTH. Should I do high back and then backless? Or just one or the other?

I'd do the high back first. We're having to get one for our daughter, crazy kid decided to go through a growth spurt!

High back then backless. At least that is my plan...we also have the nautilus and my son is your sons height but weighs a little less and we're still using the harness at 4 1/2

Most of my sons height is torso lol. But yeah I think within the next 6 months he will definitely have to go to a booster

Me to! Now after work Im gonna check where he is at with the strap slots. I cant for the life of me remember if hes on the top slot or has one more to go?! Ill be sad when hes in a booster, he hates the harness but Im not ready to move to the next step if it isnt necessary yet ya know.

Yeah, I'm sure we'll have to make that decision soon too...even though I dont want to. I hope I can trust him enough not to unbuckle himself.

my daughter is 40lbs and 42 inches and still has three slots left on her nautilus before she runs out we just lift the head rest up. Were keeping her harnessed till she hits the 65lbs or reaches the height which i think she has another year or more before she hits it., try moving the headrest up and see where the slots are after that .

That is so odd because my son is 42 inches and his shoulders are almost level with the top slots. Did they make different versions?

do you have it pulled all the way up? My daughter is 43 inches and 43 lbs and hers isnt level yet, we also have a nautilus. When he does get higher than the strap slots(if theyre all the way up, and they can be even), I would use it as a high back. The difference is that the high back holds the seat belt strap in place so it doesnt cut into their neck, whereas the booster just lifts them up so that the seat belt is in the right place. I would use the nautilus as a high back when he outgrows the 5 point harness until he cant sit in it anymore comfortably (like if he gets too wide for the seat, or if the seat belt holder stops holding the seat belt in an appropriate position for him.

AH! I just went outside to look, and when I lifted the headrest part up some more there is one more notch! So yay! That ought to get us through at least another year unless he hits an unreal growth spurt.
