Head banging tantrums

posted 28th Jun '12
I have a 21 month old that seams to be going through the terrible 2's already. He's having tantrums so bad that he will bang his head on the floor. It doesn't matter what the floor is made of wood, concrete, carpeted he will bang his head on the floor. It's starting to leave bruises on his head.
Has any one else had this issue? And how did you help your LO stop? We try to stop him and we're so afraid he's going to hurt himself.

My son did that and still does. He has been in the er 2 times with head injuries bit they were minor. We stop him by picking him up like our pedi said to do since he was hurting himself. All i know to tell u is talk to your pedi about it because sometimes it can be dangerous. Sorry i wasnt much help.

YES! my son has been having this issue since he was ten months old. he always has a big bruise on his forehead because of it

in the beginning, i always stopped him.
but then our pedi and other people told us "he's doing it for attention, let him do it and he will stop." well, we let him do it and that caused two big holes in our walls (he head bangs on walls, floors, anything hard.)
now i always stop him because i dont want anymore holes!
it's sooo stressful... he's almost 2 and i really thought he would have stopped by now

This is new behavior for him. The only time he does it is when he's told no or not getting his way. The wood or carpeted floors don't worry me as much as when he does it on concrete or tile floors.
I swear this is karma paying me back for my oldest son never going through the terrible 2's! LOL

just noticed your son has SPD, I've been so worried my son has this as well... when did it get diagnosed?

it's a common phase however if it doesnt stop in a few months i'd talk to the pedi.
our lo went through it around 18 months old. we put him in a playpen to get his feelings out and calm down.
i sat by the playpen offering comfort but usually he didnt want it.
always offer though.

playpens are padded and safe for everyone!

I had a therapist notice it when he started speech therapy. He was never officially diagnosed but was diagnosed with autism and all kids with autism have it. He was dianosed with autism in march. He has had the headbanging since he was about 1 but he would at first do it when he was sleepy and then as he got older the tantrums with headbanging started. He has other issues too though like sensitive to sounds and touch and very oral defensive so he dont eat good. He is very loving though.

not all are unfortunately, my son's head banging started in his play pen at ten months.. i thought it was pretty padded, but nope, he would bruise his forehead pretty badly by banging his head on the edge of it

I don't recall mentioning his speech delays. He has been delayed from birth due to a cleft lip and palate. He is not autistic.
