Doctor or Midwife

Okay so I thought I would do a little poll. I'm having a discussion with a few other moms on this same topic on the forum. So I thought I'd do a little poll and see what people are thinking...majority rules right?

I just found out a few days ago that I was pregnant. I estimate myself to be 6 weeks. I had a blood test done but the doctor has yet to call me with the results. I am a nurse working on a cardiac unit. I sort of feel a little obligated to have my baby in a hospital. I will interview in June for a position in Labor and Delivery. I really hope I get it. It's the type of nursing that I've always wanted to do. So anyways. I would like your thoughts. Someone mentioned that you can find a midwife by googling your city. I think that might be the easiest way for a m/w because there aren't as many. But if I choose to go with a doctor, how in the world do I narrow it down???
I'd love your input. Congrats to all!

I am having my birth in a hospital in their special birthing center with a midwife which I really like, because I hope to have a natural birth.

Okay so I am just now realizing (because I forgot) that you totally can give birth in a hospital w/ a midwife. I guess I should have made that one of the options. I wonder if my hospital does that? How would I find that out?

I also see a midwife but will be delivering at a hospital. The women's center that I go to is affiliated with a hospital where I live. Only thing is, at my last appointment, I was informed that they are currently extremely short staffed with midwives so 24/7 on-call will also include doctors. I find it a little irritating because I decided to go with the midwives I had my specific reasons. I have made sure to meet all of them because you can't guarantee which one will deliver you. Now I find out that it could also be one of the 6 doctors affiliated with the center. I go today for an appointment, so I was going to talk to my midwife in a little more detail about the change.

I actually was looking into a natural birthing commune in tennesee, with my second. They grow their own food, and you can take midwifery classes while you are there. Your family can come and stay for your entire pregnancy, and I just thought it would be wonderful..my husband was all for it...but I began having heart problems and needed to continue seeing a specialist...I was bummed out!

My midwife is delivering me at home!

I think I am the only one who voted for a home birth on that poll.

Are you talking about Ina May's Farm in Tennesee?

Eh its all about what works best for you. I didn't vote in your poll as i do have a midwife but they deliver at the hospital. When i was deciding, i visited and kind of "interviewed" two doctors and one midwife. Its all about how they make you feel. With the midwife, i felt like i was with a professional best friend and i could ask her the questions i was too embarrassed to ask the doctors. They were so much different than i thought they'd be. I always thought midwives were all just hippies. Though theres a couple different types of midwives. Some are just certified practicing midwives.. That usually deliver in your home or a birthing center. And others go to just as much school as a doctor and are willing to give you the drugs if you would like them. They're all the same but just i think doctors are more apt to press drugs on you. For me i really had my heart set on a water birth and no doctors in the area did it yet though both doctors i met with told me they thought it was a better and healthier birth and planned to offer that in the future. Sorry wasn't soon enough for me! So i went with the midwife and haven't looked back since!!!

I'm with a doctor in a hospital and lately I've been feeling like I'm going to want to "accidentally" just have the baby at home;^) I'm nervous about going to the hospital. I feel like I'll be fine and relaxed at home until I go, then I'll start to freak out. we'll see how it goes. Afterall, birth is a natural process and people in other countries have their babies at home sometimes by themselves, so why can't i?

Its the rule in my country that if you are a first time mom you have to deliver in the hospital. So I have no choice there.

I started with a doctor and was going to deliver in a hospital, but our plans have recently changed and now we plan to have a water birth at a birthing center. We have our first appointment with the midwife tomorrow and I'm very excited about it.
