Cancelled my C-Section! ::]
posted 9th May
Most of you may know that my baby has gastroshisis. Her intestins are on the outside and require surgery to place them back in the belly when she is born. 9 out of 10 have no problems whatsoever, so the prognosis is GREAT.
With that being said, I pushed for having a C-Section throughout this whole pregnancy. I've been researching it, and my doctor has told me that there is no reason to have a C-Section. Gastro babies actually do better with a vaginal birth than a C-Section. So.. I changed my mind. Now, I'm totally freaked out because we haven't taken any classes since we have been planning for a C-Section. I'm still getting induced on the 20th if she isn't here before than. And there are no classes between now and than.
My question is: Has anybody not take any classes? This is my first and I have no clue what to expect now that I'm not getting a C-Section.

I took childbirth classes and I can tell you they are a waste of money! I only took them so my husband wouldn't ask me a million questions while I'm in labor....all they teach you is that you have to dilate to 10cm efface 100%...you have the option of drugs to manage the pain...and to not to forget to breath through the painful contractions...you could end up with an episiotomy and the reasons why you may need an emergency c-section (baby too big for pelvis....malpresentaion etc)....all common sense if you ask me! You'll be fine! Your nurses and doctors will walk you though the pushing phase and what not! You'll be fine!

I didnt get a chance to take classes with my first because i was on bedrest in premature labor, but dont worry a womans body knows how to have a baby. Just try to relax and let the process happen...deep breathing techniques can be found on-line or the nurse at your hospital can help you. Just tell her that you didn't get a chance to go to classes..they helped me with techniques. A womans body doesnt need a class, it happens either way. just relax as much as possible and try to enjoy (ha ha) the experience. I only laugh because it hurts like a bitch!

lol.. I've heard! That's the only thing I'm scared of, is the pain. But I think I'll still do an epidural.. hopefully that'll help a little bit!

My mom want's me to get a c section I havnt taken any classes but I did take child development and I have been researching and reading and watching videos. My best advice is when you get into labor dont rush to go to the hospital cause the odds of you being half or fully dialated are slim. Your water may or may not break my mothers didnt and she was scheduled for natural birth. Just make sure you time your contractions and when you feel that they are really close like 5 minutes apart and you feel like the baby is crowning then you go to the doctor and they will be like oh your either 8 cm dialated or fully dialated. Then you try to get your mind of things by listening to music, watching tv, talking to whoever is in the room with you, and imagining what your going to do when you have the baby home with you. Honestly I dont think people need classes its natural and mother nature guides you like its been doing with the baby inside. Another word of suggestion if your having epidurel or any anastesia do not eat or drink anything or else you will either be throwing it up or hurting later on wait till the effect of the drug where off. I hope this helped. Usually in the classes they tell you labor positions which the book What to Expect When Your Expecting shows you, they also tell you breathing techniques but as long as you breathe normally you wont have any problems, and no matter what child birth obviously will be a little painful because of what your body is doing at a very fast pace. So all I can say is good luck and once you have your baby in your arms you wont care about anything else.

The way I see it, women have been giving birth for thousands of years without taking classes, so don't worry about it. You'll know what to do. Plus the doctor and nurses will be there to tell you when to push and all that. But, if you're really worried, go to the library. They have lots of videos on labour and birth and all that. Personally, after having seen those videos I'm glad I saved my time and money by not going to any prenatal classes.They didn't tell me anything I hadn't already heard or read.

ive had two kids and I had them both vaginally without any meds. As a matter of fact I was in Mexico when I had my children and the hospitals where I was were horrible. You'll be fine. The hardest part is waiting to be fully dilated. Just try to relax at home until the contractions are 3-5 minutes apart before going to the hospital. (thats if you live right down the road from it though)

I'm dilated to a 3 already and we live about an hour and a half away. (The hospital is in DC, and we live in Virginia) :[ That's the only thing that scares me. I just haven't prepared myself for this since I thought I was getting a C-Section. Oh well though, that's life- right? haha
Thank you all for your advice! I feel much better!

Oh, I used to live in your area - first in DC itself and then in Annandale, VA (right by Alexandria) . I don't miss the traffic...but you'll be fine. Where I live in relation to the hospital is far away and I went into labour during rush hour and had to go over a bridge (that's always clogged) but I still had looooooooooooooooots of time.
