Breastfeeding tips please!

posted 27th Jun '12
I had my LO yesterday, and I am having trouble feeding. I am doing great on my right side (granted milk not in just yet) But I have an inverted nipple on the left side and I am having trouble with that one. I am using a nipple shield, and a pump to get my nipple out so I can feed. I just feel like giving up because I am doing it every hour and my breasts are getting pretty sore   If anyone has any tips on how to make this a better experience for me and to keep me from going to bottle, please let me know!

Hey there.

I didn't have an inverted nipple but I did have to use the shield on my nipples since my son couldn't latch to save his life. It was the most horrible time in my life.

It DID get better though. For some babies and mamas it doesn't come naturally.

Are you still in the hospital? Get a lactation counseler in there ASAP. if you have already seen one ask to see them again.

It is so hard. SO SO HARD. I was so mad at all the moms who posted about how easy it was.

As for soreness. Thats normal. Your nipples need I toughen up. Just do lanolin for now and when your milk comes in express some milk on your nipples an let them air dry.

I know now it is hard but breastfeeding does become convient in the long run. And don't give a bottle. That will make it even harder.

Congrats on the baby, and if you need more encouragement or advice feel free to pm me.

They also have these gel soothie pads you can use to help with pain.

If worse comes to worse I would just feed on the right and when baby gets better at breastfeeding you could offer the left.

In the meantime you could pump the left and store the milk.

However if you can get baby to take both sides that's even better.

Again. Good luck OP and sorry for such long post.

Since youre here, Ill ask you

So, my scabbing/cut in my nipple has pretty much gone now, but its still a little sore when she latches on the right side..The lanolin will help this?

Depends.
I found in the beginning it was more of a "rawness" that the lanolin helped.

It sounds like you are just finishing up the rest of the "toughening" up. I would recommend ice packs of sorts. Is it just when she initially latches? What does your nipple feel like when she unlatches? It however doesn't hurt to keep appling lanolin to help make sure your nipples don't dry out and you will be back to square one with cracked nipples.

Just when she initially latches, really. Then sometimes after she is done, & air hits it it stings.

But after she is nursing for a min it goes away & she can put it in and out of her mouth with next to no issues.

Any chance she has thrush? I hope not. But that is what my nipples felt like when I had it. It was just the initial latch on that hurt like a bitch.

Could it be your let down that you are feeling?

So many options. But if you can nurse through it keep going. You are doing amazing.

I never got the let down sensation.   so I have no advice on that area. Lol.

But good. If your left breast feels no pain I would think the right would be following suit soon.
