Anyone ever worked for Walmart?
posted 26th Jun '12
We just got a Walmart in town and I really need to get a second job (not that I have the time for it, just a great big NEED for it), so I was thinking of applying to work there one or two nights a week and then on my days off from my real job.
Do they suck to work for? Should I try somewhere else?

My aunt and cousin both work at Walmart. I've heard they don't treat their employees the best but for working at Walmart get paid pretty good!

Ive never worked there but many people say that they hardly give you hours and are not flexible, but I guess it depends where you are at.
ETA: My SO does work for the walmart distribution center and gets 17.65/hr, Im not sure how much the stores pay.

pay is really good i wont lie and i never had issues...i had awesome managers but crappy hours bc they go by seniority...

If you really need it then go for it but the one I worked at treated the employees like cattle. I was taking 17 credit hours at school and told them I couldn't work more than 25 hours a week. Week after week I was scheduled for 36-37 hours.

I worked there as a seasonal worker through the holidays last year and it was fine. Everyone I worked with was nice enough and as a checker it was really easy.

No but I did have an interview there awhile ago. I showed up 15 minutes early to my interview and they saw me 2 hours later. I was pissed. I ended up being there for 6 hours because they didn't have their smurf together. I'm kinda glad they didn't hire me.

Well, I mean, since it's a second income I don't really care how they treat me as long as they give me a paycheck. I know that sounds awful but I'm desperate.
But I would need for them to be regular and flexible with my schedule, so that's worrisome. I already have a full-time job, and school starts in August so I can't have them trying to work me six days a week or anything...

There are worse places you can work, at least you get insurance, overtime and holiday pay, vacations and personal days, if your full time though.
Part time, is no better or worse than any other part time job.

My husband, MIL, FIL, SIL, dad, and cousin have all worked for walmsrt. Thay have never had any positive things to say about working there. They all hate it. In fact when ever a walmart commercial comes on, my husband flips off the tv and changes the channel.

I worked there for about 4 months. My son got extremely sick and was hospitlized for a week. They were not understanding at all and threatened to fire me if I didnt go back to work. I just quit because leaving him at the hospital alone was not a choice.

It's really not the best..I'm thinking about finding a new job.. but after a year you do get good benefits.. They've just been cutting my hours and that's not good, I need money.

How long ago was this? You should have filed for FMLA.

I worked there for 3 years and they fired me when I was 6 months pregnant. I had FMLA paper work filled out, they put me on "intermittent LOA" and if I needed any days off, I was allowed to have them [or as I was told] because I had the worst morning sickness from 6 weeks until 22 weeks. They fired me saying I missed too many days, but whatever.
It's a job, that's basically all I can say. My fiance still works there and he tolerates it, only because it's hard to get a job in this economy.

They're not very flexible with hours. If you apply saying you can only work x amount of hours, you might not get the job. They typically want completely open. I work for them now. I HATE it. I hate how they don't give a smurf that I never get to see my son because they decided to change me to 2nd shift. I can't wait until I tell them I'm going to college this fall. A few people are quitting because they're going to college or needed their hours to be cut. They refused to cut a friend of mine's hours. She's pregnant and ended up passing out because of working too much. They cut everyone else's hours in her department though. She quit.
