Traveling with kids, help!

posted 26th Jun '12
We are leaving friday to go to Michigan to see DH's family. We may drive straight thru, we may get a hotel along the the way. We haven't decided yet.
I need any and all tips for traveling with a 3 1/2 year old and a 14 month old, please!
DS is only 16 pounds and 28 inches so his pedi said we didn't have to switch him from the infant carrier yet. So we have one rear facing and one forward facing who gets carsick so movies/books are out. I've bought dramamine and tried to get easy, bland snacks like teddy grahams, goldfish and animal crackers. I plan to only let DD (the one who gets carsick) have water to drink and we will be sure to let her get out to walk around and get fresh air whenever we can.
Does anyone have any other ideas to make this as painless as possible? I know it's going to suck traveling that far with 2 kids regardless. We have a Ford Escape so the carseats are on each side, each kid has a window seat. I've tried reading up on ideas but I want to hear from other moms : )
Thanks ladies!

Dramamine should knock your daughter out (unless they have non-drowsy now) so you shouldn't need too much to entertain her. My DD is 6 months and is thoroughly entertained by a mirror and some of her favorite stuffed animals that play music.

My kids are 5 and almost 3 and were leaving for vacation Friday. I'm bringing portable DVD player w/ movies, DS, Gameboy, books, coloring books/ crayons, tv trays to go over their laps, iPad, etc.

Ah, I miss those days : ) I went to TX with one of my friends and all our girls who were 2 years, 6 months and 6 weeks at the time and it was soooo easy!
The dramamine usually works or the doctor said I could try benadryl. It's just going to be a long paranoid ride

I'm not sure about that honestly. I used to get EXTREMELY carsick as a kid. I couldn't look down in the car without getting a nauseating headache. It didn't matter what I was looking at, phone, book, map, etc. But it's totally nice how she is easily entertained haha. Mostly she just sleeps anyway. She can't stay awake in the car!

I have friends who always start their drive at night. They get the kids in their PJs and start the drive that way they sleep through 8-9 hours of the trip. It sucks for one of the adults, but may be easier in the long run.

My lap trays have two compartments on the side for things and a drink holder.

Yeah I tend to get sick from turning around to check on her constantly at every little noise she makes, thinking she's going to puke. I've been trying to work with her so she can do it in a bucket if she does get sick

I was thinking of that! But DH will just be coming off of 4 day shifts so he'll be pretty tired. We may keep driving through the night though so we can get there earlier.
