School Clothes...if your child doesn't have uniforms?

posted 26th Jun '12
What kind of clothing do you send him/her to school in?

Do you try to stick with plain colored tees with maybe a design (like flowers for girl or trucks for boys...etc) or do you send them with graphic tees?

All the handbook says for my daughter's school is there can be no graphics about drugs, alcohol, sex, guns, cigarettes...or anything of that nature (or anything that could be offensive to someone else like racism).

I need help lol! I am buying my children their school clothes Saturday....

Depending on the age of your kid, I would take them with you and have them find stuff they like, obviously with your guidance. I believe giving kids choices about how they want to represent themself gives them positive self-esteem and encourages choice. Just make sure for girls they try on any shorts. For some reason, some major stores have shorts that are very out of dress code for schools.

My boys wear graphic tees and tees with brand logos on them and it's never been an issue.... I know some areas are really strict with dress codes though. In some districts for instance (I work in education) the kids can't even wear certain basic colors because of possible gang affiliation, etc..

There wansnt any uniforms in my school.

I use to wear tshirts some times with sayings sometimes not or with animals or cartoon characters on it or just a plain tshirt

Also If they didnt like what was on the shirt they would make someone turn the shirt inside out.

Keep skirts/shorts past fingertips and no spaghetti strap shirts

DS was in kindergarten last year. In the beginning and end when it was nice, he wore shorts and a t-shirt. The majority of the school year, the weather sucks so it was jeans or track pants or sweat pants with a long sleeved shirt or t-shirt with a hoodie. He has some plain colored shirts, some graphic t-shirts, and some button up or polo shirts. I just alternated based on that day's activities. Like gym days always had to be tennis shoes and I put him in looser pants and shirts those days. And I didn't have him wear anything too nice on days when they had art class. He has a favorite t-shirt that says GI Joe and has a pic of a GI Joe with a gun. I didn't really think about it but he wore it to school a lot and nobody said anything but they probably just didn't notice I guess.

I don't have kids who are school age. But I always picked my own stuff. My mom had to approve it, but I got what I wanted.

Lily has some graphic T's, but for the most part hers are one-colored or just a few colors. I try to get clothes that are easily matched with various outfits. Her school has a rule that tank tops have to be wider than 2 finger spaces, so her tank tops tend to be colors she can pair with jeans, other colored capri's or shorts. The skinnier strap capri's she wears in the winter layered over regular short sleeve shirts or long sleeve shirts. Then she even has skirts that can be layered over cotton leggings, so they can be used in multiple seasons. We try to make sure her clothes can be used comfortably at home and at school and be quickly paired with various outfits. We don't usually buy shirts that only go with one pair of pants, or eclectic patterns that don't go with many things. If we get graphic T's we try to get the colorful ones so they can be matched with other outfits. So basically, adaptability is key for us.

A great deal of her clothes come from The Children's Place or Kohl's,

I have boys who are both in preschool and my oldest is starting kindergarten this year. I started school shopping a few weeks ago. They both LOVE basketball shorts, so they have a ton of nike or adidas gym shorts with matching tshirts. I also buy them a lot of plaid shorts. They both love anything with guitars, drums, sports, or skulls on it! And, of course, khaki shorts and polo shirts

I saw a shirt I liked for my daughter that had skulls on it but I am worried she'd get in trouble for having skulls on her shirt because that could represent death in their eye. Idk. I dont want to buy something and find out she can't wear it and then I don't have money to get something different. We're on a very tight budget.

My son wore skull shirts to kindergarten. He picks his own clothes so he wore a lot of collared shirts and plaid button ups. He even wore a pajama shirt one day lol. I think as long it the shirt is obscene or inappropriate it will be fine.
This is pretty much what he looked like every cold day. He had a mohawk over half the school year also.
