Getting paid to be a caregiver for someone in your family

posted 26th Jun '12
Here is the situation currently, I cannot find childcare for my son on a full time basis. We have drop in care through a family friend as a respite situation but I've called all the special needs day cares in the area and they all tell me the same thing, they would need a separate nurse/therapist for my son and any other child with ASD and they cannot afford to bring on new hires right now but they've all taken my phone number and email should that change.

My mom was recently in town and she told me her friend is getting money, its almost like disability or social security pay to care for her autistic grandson full time. Is this something I can do? I want to go back to work but seeing as how I cannot find adequate care outside the home it isnt an option, neither is working a separate shift from my husband since his schedule is unpredictable due to being in the military.

Any advice would be great.

That lady probably gets her grandsons SS money to care for him

she isn't being paid, she is in charge of his money cause he can't be

me ex step mom does that for her son, at least in our state (MI) they will give her son ssi/disability, and he is 10. i dont think she has to care for him to get the money though, because she gets it no matter if he is being watched by someone else and she works another job. I could be wrong though, i just know she gets it for her son.

You can apply for ssidc, social security income for disabled child. Your child will get a monthly amount, medicaid, and respite care as well as a home health aide if needed.

No, she just watches him during the week. His mom & dad have him the other times. But I guess her daughter and son in law could be giving their mom the social security money to watch him?

Oh ok, we get home health care already and its covered through insurance so I'll look into the ssidc I just dont want it to take away from him when hes older or something.

She is probably getting paid with the disability child watch thing...it is for non-parents and you have to be CPR certified and know how to take care of said children. My friend gets it and when she needs to go do something I can recieve it for babysitting her daughter.

I'm going to assume she is being paid as a home health aide of the child. SS might pay her a set amount to care for the child so they don't have to hire an actual nurse to watch him.

My friends child was a Preemie and has many health issues, SS paid her mother( as in the childs grandmother) 9.50 an hour to watch her so that they didn't have to bring on a nurse to help the mother. She had to take classes through the hospital to learn how to tend to her trach though and stuff like that.

There is a program here where a friend of mine gets paid to take care of his mom who has cancer. I don't know what it's called though

Waht do you mean take away from him when he's older?

He will still get medicaid, so that if your insurance doesn't cover certain things they will pick up the slack.

My son gets it, and they cover a lot of things, more so then normal medicaid.

I guess I mean can he only receive those benefits for a set amount of time, will they run out I guess.

NOOOPPEEE but the way social security is going not enough people are paying in. It doesn't matter if he gets it now and he needs it. It doesn't take away from anything. My uncle has been on disability ssi for a good 20 years now due to his down syndrome.

He will be able to receive them until her hits 18 or 21 ( I don't remember which one) and then once that ends if he is found to be "unworkable" he will continue to get SSI.

Sometimes SS will set your child up with jobs and allow a certain amount of money to make it so they can to their jobs ( if they need specialized equipment, shoes, or someone to help them to do their job.). There are actually quite a few programs here who hire handicapped people to do jobs, and have people on site to help them.

Oh thats good! I think eventually the way things are going he'll be able to work or do something we'll have to see though.

Its 21.   We have a whole place dedicated to help people with disabilites do jobs and the SSI pays for part of the specialized care.
