They took my job.

posted 26th Jun '12
I got a great job offer with another company, so I quit my current job (well I gave 2.5 weeks notice) and just had to have my background check go through and then I would start my orientation at my new job.
My last day at my current job is this week, my first day at my new job was supposed to be the 2nd. The director of HR called me and told me she had to withdraw my job offer because of a discrepancy on my background check. Apparently a woman I worked for for less than 3 months that verbally harassed me to the point of quitting told the people conducting the background check that she fired me because I was a no-call no-show. And because of that I don't get to have my job, the one I have trying to get for the last 2 years, the one I was so close to getting.
I have no clue what to do now, it wasn't even a real job, it was just selling some second hand clothes out of a house and the woman hated me. I usually don't even include it but the background check said I needed to include ALL employment history and I didn't want to leave anything out.
The people that were going to hire me said that if I can prove that I wasn't a no call no show that I can have the job, but I have no idea how to do that.
Can anyone help?

Do you have termination/resignation paperwork? You should get that any time you leave a job.

Did you report the harassment?

Did you have any co-workers? You could have them back you up.

It's actually illegal for them to give the reason they fired you. All they really are allowed to say is if you are re-hirable or not.

I would personally have someone you have worked with in the past tell them how reliable you are and that they have known you for x-amount to time and that you have always been responsible, reliable, and hard working and that that person you worked for was a hateful person or something like that.

Wow, that sucks. Was it an actual business she was running or just a side thing you helped with?

No I don't. It was just a rinky dink operation out of a rental house. I worked there over 3 years ago too.

What she said is illegal. Were you given termination papers, a write up, anything? What about other employment? What do other employers have to say about you?

The only other people that worked there were her family, or family friends.

I would contact HR at the place you wanted the job for and see if there is anything you can do to rectify the situation. Explain to them that you actually quit based on harassment
