Can you over feed....
posted 26th Jun '12
..a breastfed newborn? Little girl is a week old yesterday.. Up until then she was on a regular every 2 1/2-3 hour feeding schedule with little to no fussing. Yesterday she was a different girl. Demanding to be fed almost every hour. Nothing else would console her. Am I rushing to the boob to soon or is this normal? I read that breastfed babies eat until they are satisfied then I read you can over feed?? Could yesterday be the start of cluster feedings and how long if so does that phase last? Any advice welcome... First time mama... Thanks!

More than likely she was just cluster feeding. And breast fed babies nurse for comfort too so she may not really be hungry but just wanting the boob for comfort. I've never heard of over feeding a baby. Just feed her until she is content. Follow her cues.

Cluster feeding, demand feeding, they call it a bunch of different things but when they go through growth spurts they "demand feed" and its to increase your milk supply for their growing appetite, in a day or two your milk should re-level out to what the baby needs. My LC told me to expect it in the beginning around day 10 and around day 21 and then after that is pretty much different for every infant on when theyre growth spurts are going to be.

but anyways, same as formula fed babies, when they take in too much milk they will spit up.

Lol no you cant overfeed a baby. They will either refuse or spit up. Or spit ip from to much swallowed air. At the begining i litteraly gave him the boob every time he cried, it took a little while but we got a pattern and im AAY ntter at knowing what he wants now (3 months old). The boob IS his soother and he still eats every two hours (if not every hour) and wakes up three time s a nigt. This does NOT mean you need to pump and give her bm thicken eith cereal. That is a horrible sunstatute. Newborns/infants/toddlers are PERFECTLY healthy and fine to wake up every two hours to eat. Especially ebf babies. Ollie cluster fed for about 3 weeks almost a month. And i still only feed him on one boob per feeding. He hasnt needed anymore and hes a healthy chunky baby just keep doing what tour doing. Yiull get it! And personally congrats on the bfing!!! Its awesome to hear about mamas who deside to do it!

Thanks so much! Shoulda stopped by sooner for the positive reinforcement! I'm glad to be breast feeding, it makes me happy to know I'm doing the best thing for her. Just need to remind myself it's a learning process for both of us
