ASD in kids

posted 24th Jun '12
if you are a parent of a child with ASD. how did you find out? what are some of the signs. i was talking to some parents on here about my son and they mentioned ASL so i looked it up and Conan exhibits some of the signs. but i refuse to jump to that conclusion untill i talk to some moms who have been there and then talk to a doc.

(autism spectrum disorder)

any and all advice is welcome
please keep this nice, no rude comments i just want answers

Autism Spectrum Disorder is what Jacob has. And we didn't get diagnosed until he was school age because those were when his symptoms were most apparent.

Still are.

My daughter is not on the spectrum, but she does have Sensory Processing Disorder which can look a lot like Autism. There are many of the same red flags. Once we got her over many of the sensory issues she really flourished though.

WE started out with SPD and when he got to school age is when we got diagnosed with ASD. High functioning.

Really?

We suspected somewhere on the spectrum at first. She wasn't talking, making eye contact, nothing. She was only 18 months but it was pretty bad. We've been working with Early Intervention about a year and she's now caught up on almost everything. Her expressive language is still a little behind, but not bad (at 18 months she was evaled at a 3 month level). She interacts now really well, so I really suspect it was just SPD. I know a lot of kids can have SPD not autism because they can look so similar.

A lot of times it is less apperant until school aged because as the language is still lacking its hard to tell... Once the atypical language starts it becomes more apperant...

So, Teagan could still end up on the spectrum? I know you're not a Dr, lol, but I guess since she'd made so much progress I'd dismissed the possibility.

We never caught up with anything. Even after 2 years of EI. He's still lacking in speech drastically and his teacher even wants to move up his ST to the max starting in the fall.

Possibly yes... I know around the time jamils speech came in we really all thought the diagnosis would be dropped it was before his 3rd birthday, but as his speech really developed, he had single and paired words but as more speech came in it didn't develop into natural spontaneous speech, and around 3 his stims really started

That said, he was always pretty flappy to some extent (which was and still is sensory seeking
