Screaming in public?

posted 23rd Jun '12
Hey ladies, My 3 year old has been screaming in public when I take him out, not crying just screaming. I keep telling him "no" and pull him into a bathroom for a timeout. He keeps doing it though, how can I get him to stop this behavior? Should I keep up with the timeouts?

I take my kid. And then leave. It works for us though because usually when we go places all four of us go, so one of us can stay in the store or whatever and finish what we need done and the other can take the screaming child and go.

I wish that was an option for me but i'm a single mommy so I have to get my shopping done haha

Why is he screaming? Is he bored? Bring him some toys or coloring books to color with.

Duct tape. Answer for everything.

But seriously, I bribe the smurf out of my kids. It's called "positive reinforcement". "Be a good boy and you can have a treat when we're done". If he screams, I'll take him to the car for a time out to reload then go back in when he's calm. And start the process all over again.

Bring a small toy to distract him with?

If Jack starts randomly screaming, I ignore him and after he realizes that idgaf that he's screaming, he stops.

I honestly don't acknowledge them. My daughter used to do this everytime we were out and she didn't get her way, i would walk a few feet from her, like arms length and pretend I don't see her. When she realized I wasn't paying her no mind, she'd come and tell me she wants a hug, which I gave her and we bumped fists and I tell her its over, she agrees and we continue on, now the tantrums have stopped and she'll just come and bump fists with me when she's done being upset lol

I know this may seem silly but have you tried asking him why he's screaming? Calmly having a conversation with him about it? Also, maybe you could try letting him help you shop so he's entertained.

He brings a firetruck with him, but as soon as his sirens go off on the truck he screams then laughs hysterically

When my children act up, I tell them that they have to stop misbehaving or we'll go in the car and wait until they are done (we've done it. I've sat in the Target parking lot for 45 minutes before.) But, I also tell them if they are good girls, I will get them something- I don't go over the top, its usually something I was going to get anyway like their favorite yogurt or a character shampoo etc. I usually let them hold the "prize" while in the store but if they act up, I take the prize away and tell them I'm not going to buy it unless they are good. At the end of the trip, if they've behaved well, I'll make a big deal and shower them with hugs and kisses and say over and over "you were such a good girl, thank you so much for being a good girl." then it encourages them to repeat the behavior.

Good idea, but can't help to feel a little embarrassed when his screams echo throughout the whole store, i've even had some people tell me to "shut that kid up" I know I should ignore them but it still gets on my nerves..

I don't care about the embarassment factor, people can stare all they want.
I have honestly tried it all-
screaming at her
time outs
rewards
taking things away
I honestly find not paying it any mind seems to work for my little one. I usually say, "I'm not even going to try to talk to you when you're like this, if you're ready to be a big girl and tell me what's wrong I'm here to listen"
