parenting question

LO is only 6 weeks old and has always been a pretty good baby so far but now he is starting to cry more often. I realize this is to be expected because he is awake more so hes gonna cry more. my question is if he has just been fed, just been changed, and is swaddled and I can think of anything else wrong and he is still crying is it wrong to give him attention? at what age should i stop giving him attention for crying for no reason? ive read some crap on the cry it out method and that seems kinda cruel to me but at the same time i dont want to raise a little brat. what has worked for everyone else? is it too soon to even be worrying about this and if so when should i?

Of course not. He's not crying for no reason. He can't talk, that's his only way to communicate. Babies don't only have physical needs, they have emotional needs too and responding to those needs will make them secure and confident not a brat.

You CANNOT give a baby under a year old too much attention. This is an old wives tale, myth, whatever you want to call it. If your baby cries, console him/her. Simple. It forms a secure attachment so that one day they miraculously will not need you all the time anymore : ) A few good internet searches will confirm my answer if you check the latest ressearch. Respond to tha bebe!!

IMO its way too early for the cry it out method. Could be gas, reflux, colic.... or a number of other things.

Just hold him, rock him, feed him. He may be going through a growth spurt too.

CIO is not recommended for a baby so young

No you should always tend to a small baby when they are crying. If you do eventually use CIO, this stage is not the appropriate time. He needs you for love and attention as much as he needs you to change his diapers and feed him. He may be having gas issues, who knows. Its so hard to really know sometimes. He needs your love and attention. Go to the Dr.Sears website. I think it will be really helpful.

He is 6 weeks old, he isnt even close to becoming a brat yet. Brats are usually pining for their parents attention anyway.

NEVER!! you can not spoil and infant!!! thats a old wives tale and isn't true!@@ giving your baby attention is what strengthens the bond, it also will give the child more confidence in the future if you were ignored every time you got upset would you feel like you could go to that person??/... remember he spent 9 months in your womb held and rocked.... kept it up!

He's not crying for no reason. It's his only way to communicate with you at this point. Maybe he just wants to be held. What hard does that do? I've never allowed my daughter to cry it out and by no means is she a brat.

He is crying because he doesn't have words to tell you what he wants. A 6 week old will cry frequently. My 6 week old woke me up because she wanted me to look at her while she fell asleep. It is completely normal! You aren't goinjg to spoil him babies are meant to be held they are designed to be. The only reason humans give birth at 40 weeks is so they can fit thru your pelvis they aren't really well equipped to be in the world yet. Just give him the attention he wants.

I like that statement... The only reason we're born at 40 weeks is to fit through the pelvis... Makes a whole lot of sense!

My aunt who is a birthing instructor told me this when I first got pregnant and it will always stick with me! If you think about it it makes a lot of sense not a whole lot of other mammals are born as defensless as a human. Heck most other mammals can walk within a few hours!
