Abnormal Sonogram= stressed out mommy!

posted 22nd Jun '12
I had my 20 week sonogram on Tuesday and they couldn't get a view of everything that they wanted to see but they also said that they seen something a little off. They said they think they saw a layer of thick skin on the back of his neck and are making me go for another sonogram. The doctors also really wanted me to do the quad screening test because it could be linked to whatever they thought they saw. I just wanted to know if anybody else has been through this or something similar. My fiance does not want to talk about it because he said that it doesn't matter if something is wrong or not it is not going to change how he feels about our son. While I understand that and agree completely it would be nice to have somebody to talk to about it. So any advice or comfort would be greatly appreciated. This is my first child and I worry so much and now I just want to know if something is wrong.

I believe when they see an extra layer of skin on the neck they are concerned about Down's Syndrome. However, I also believe that having the quad-screen test at this point in your pregnancy wouldn't be accurate, anyway. (I believe it has to be done between the 14th and 18th week.) I am not 100% sure on that, however. I would definitely follow-up with whatever your doctor suggests. I am assuming they will send you for a level-two ultrasound and then possibly amniocentesis.

I didn't do the screening test, because, like your SO said, it doesn't matter if something is wrong, it's still your baby. The tests aren't always 100% and there is a small risk of misscariage. One of my ultrasounds showed something possibly wrong with the kidneys so they sent me to a specialist to get a 3D and he said everything was perfect! Seriously, try not to worry about it. It could be something or it could be nothing and most likely if it is something then there's nothing you can do about it.

They check the back of the neck for something called a nuchal fold, usually its a sign of down syndrome if its to thick. They will probably want to do more blood work, a more in depth ultrasound, and possibly an amniocentisis if you agree to it. Dont panic yet. Those test have been known for sooooo many false positives for ds.

Did you ask your doc it meant if he had a thick layer of skin on his neck? I has an abnormal scan with my boy, one kidney was larger than the other I googled that night (after crying a little) and found out it could fix itself, its more common in boys and could be a sign of downs. I asked my doc at our next appointment and he didn't believe it was anything his son had had that too my son may have just needed to pee but he wanted to be sure and that's why we were going again. So we hoped for the best and knew that if he did have downs that was how he was meant to be and at the next sonogram it had fixed itself. Try not to stress mama, your baby will be perfect no matter what

yep. A level 2 sonogram will help them look more in depth at the other "signs" (bridge of the nose, etc). Definitely dont panic. And honestly, downs is NOT the end of the world. I prepared for it when my daughter's tests all came back positive for downs--something you guys can work through

Yes, my doc told me he'd do the test if I wanted but 90% of time you get a false possitive and he didn't want me to cry for no reason so he recommened not doing it if he had downs he had downs, no changing it might ass well just wait and see

They said the skin on my son's neck looked slightly thick in our 22 week ultrasound... But they also said he was a she... Sometimes the later ones can be inaccurate. He'll be perfect either way

while your SO has a valid point about loving the child anyway.....being able to be prepared for a possible disability in your child can make life a little less stressful when the baby arrives. Educating yourselves on treatment options, government resources, and possible medical interventions plus researching local support groups can make all the difference in the world when it comes to succeeding from the beginning w/a ''specail needs'' child. Once the baby arrives it will be very stressful if there is an issue to try and scrammble for everything!

Thank you everybody. I am hoping for the best. I will post again when I get my next sonogram. I know he will be perfect no matter what. It is not going to change how we feel about him already. He kicks like crazy and is already my pride and joy! Its crazy how you can love somebody so much without even meeting them first. I am already proud to be a mommy!

I know what you mean   Tamel is almost 4 months old and I keep waiting to wake up from a dream or something he's too perfect to be real. I've never been one to show off but he's always the first person introduced
