blocked tear duct
posted 22nd Jun '12
My daughter has a blocked tear duct. she's a week old. I've been massaging the duct and cleaning the goop from her eye. I've also been squirting my milk in her eye to help remove the goop.
Anyone else have or had a newborn with a blocked duct? How long did it take to unclog? Is there anything else I should be doing?

I did the same thing you are doing for DD when she was a newb. It took about a week or 2 to clear up. when you say massaging do you press on the bridge of her nose area?

Yes, the inner corner of her eye/top of her nose. she's so tiny I can rub both at once with a single finger.

I use a warm wash cloth and hold it to her eye to loosen ul the goop before wiping it off. then ill put a few drops of my milk in her eye and get the rest of the goop off

Yeah, goop was coming out of the inner corner when I did it before bed, I just hope I'm making progress unclogging it. I feel bad that her eye is goopy

My LO got one around one week old as well. It went away after about a week or so. As long as you're doing everything that you are, it should clear up in no time!

Is there a certain amount of times per day I should be doing it? I pretty much am doing it all day long during feedings. I just squirted some milk in her eye cuz there was a bunch of build up.and wiped it off. its worse at night when she sleeps

My daughters didn't clear fully until she was a year and a half old, they wanted to do surgery when she was a year, but I had hope it'd clear up. There's drops that help clean out and open it up though, I took her to an eye doctor.

Yeah I googled it a bit earlier. I'd rather not have to do anything too drastic and am hoping it unclogs soon rather than a year from now.
she has an appointment tomorrow with her pedi so I'm hoping he can take a good look at it. I thought she might've had pink eye but her eye isn't red and the goop isn't green

They try to make you wait it out, because it is a self-fixer but usually after they turn 1 its not likely to unclog naturally. Just wait it out.. Id said in a month or two it's still doing it, you can get some drops and what not.. A warm compress and massage is excellent as well.

Is there a certain way I should be massaging? I've just been rubbing the area in small circular motions

keep doing what you are doing and get a warm wash cloth and lay it across her eye for a minute and then wipe from the bridge of her nose out it should clear up in a week or 2
