Why isn't

posted 22nd Jun '12
my child sleeping? For the last month, she absolutely refuses to sleep. She fights and fights and fights until her dad gets home from work at 3 am. She has a bed time routine, I put her to sleep full, she has her binky still. I put her to bed at 9pm and she ALWAYS wakes right back up, and won't go back to sleep at night. She'll sleep ALL NIGHT long in my lap, but as soon as I lay her down she pops up and assumes it's play time.

No lights, no TV, nothing, but she fights to stay awake and just stares at the ceiling all night. It doesn't matter if I rock her, sing to her, read to her, she's wide awake. She fights all night, gets grumpy, wakes up and cries all day, and then she expects me to let her sleep all afternoon.

She's tired, SO and I are exhausted, and I'm always on a short fuse lately because all she does is cry.

What the heck can I do to get this child to sleep? CIO doesn't work for her, she would scream and cry all night long if I didn't go in and get her.

I did that today. I put her to sleep at 8:30 tonight, and she's sitting here, wide awake. She refuses to sleep or stay asleep, unless I am holding her.

That doesn't help unless they are older kids (around 3 or older).
Sleep is so important for babies & her not getting enough sleep one night... can mess up her name the next day... which can mess up her sleep the next night.. & so on.
Have you read the book The No Cry Sleep Solution? It's a good read & explains ALOT.

She is an extremely high needs kid, so reading a book is impossible. I've got my kindle loaded up and can't even touch it. The only reason I am able to get on the computer every once in a while lately is when she is eating.

I have to be touching her at all times, or she freaks out. I am getting so frustrated, because her not sleeping, and me trying to get her to sleep all night, is all I do anymore.

We do. I would cuddle her and then lay her down, because the only time I can get anything done is when she is sleeping. The last month, as soon as I put her down she wakes up. We don't have the same bedtime, so I lay her down, and get into bed with her later.

I have no idea what threw her sleep off so much, she used to be an amazing sleeper.

Perhaps there's a deeper issue going on than you know about...?
It sounds more serious to me than the average "not sleeping" toddler.... I would contact the doctor. I know they can hook them up to monitors & run tests for something to do with sleep, I forget what it's called, perhaps her brain waves? but yeah, I would call the pedi.

Does she eat right?

She's a little piggy, she eats great. We stay home a LOT, so do you think it's possible she's not being stimulated enough? Her not sleeping is the only issue I've noticed. Her behavior is fine, she's thriving.

That could be. As she's getting older, she might be getting stir crazy & not being able to burn off enough energy. Maybe try to take her to the park daily (or even just a walk around the block), & see if that changes anything.

Now that you mention it, I do remember having an issue similar to this when I moved into an apartment with my (then) 2 yr old. I had to make more of an effort to get outside with him, he did eventually start sleeping better again. so good luck!!
