weird start to period.

This is going to be TMI, just to warn.
I never have thick discharge when I get.my.period. today I did, it wasn't smelly or colored just white so o know its not an infection.
And normally, ill spot for a day and.then.get.heavier.
Today, I had to thick discharge and then.nothing for.hours.
Then it was the mucus stuff, but it was bright red, is expect it to brown first then pinken and then turn.bright red like it was.
What could.cause a change like that?
