Baby wash causing positive drug test!

Is It Baby Wash or…Marijuana?

Imagine this: your newborn baby tests positive in the hospital for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in marijuana. Child protective services shows up at your home to question you about the presence of drugs in your baby’s system. They’re talking as if you are an abusive parent who shouldn’t have custody of your own child. Sound like a nightmare? It is…and it can happen to you, too.

A new study, published in the June issue of the journal Clinical Biochemistry, found that five baby washes—Johnson & Johnson’s Head-to-Toe Baby Wash, J&J Bedtime Bath, CVS Night-Time Baby Bath, Aveeno Soothing Relief Creamy Wash, and Aveeno Wash Shampoo—contain trace amounts of a substance that can lead to a false positive on a drug test.
The researchers began their investigation after nurses at UNC Chapel Hill reported an increase in the number of newborns testing positive for marijuana. ”We really did this to help protect families from being falsely accused” of drug use, and to help ensure that intervention efforts are directed to babies who are truly at risk of drug exposure, said study researcher Dr. Carl Seashore, a pediatrician in the newborn nursery at UNC Chapel Hill.
Up until now, you may have had no idea that newborns were even screened for drugs in the hospital. Well, they are. In fact, such tests are common…especially in babies born to moms who are considered “high-risk.” What makes a woman high-risk? Well, not coming to the hospital for regular prenatal visits is a prime indicator. In fact, the hospital in question, UNC Chapel Hill, says that they test 10 to 40 percent of babies born there each month.
It’s important to note that these baby soaps don’t replicate the “high” of being on marijuana in a baby. “It’s not marijuana a in any way, shape or form,” said study researcher Catherine Hammett-Stabler, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
What exactly it is, though, is still in question. The researchers aren’t sure exactly why babies who have used these soaps can test positive for marijuana. It could be that some of the compounds in the soap have a structure that is partly similar to THC, or it could be that chemicals in the soap change the way the test works, Hammett-Stabler said.
Regardless of the science behind it, it’s pretty disconcerting that our children could have something similar to marijuana in their system. Equally disconcerting is the idea that child protective services could be showing up at our doors. As a result of their research, UNC Chapel Hill now sends all positive newborn drug urine tests for conformation before any action is taken. Let’s hope other hospitals do the same.
Either that, or they stop using those darn soaps!

Hm.. I use Johnson&Johnson.

Apparently my LO didn't get tested. and I was high-risk, had appointments about every week.
Either that or they just didn't care. *shrugs*

Your body produces THC anyways.

I just don't understand how a bath wash can make you test positive for it?

That's crazy, wonder how many babies were taken from their families before they r ealized it was the body wash? J&J has had a lot of negitive press with there baby shampoo & bath lately, that's why I try to buy the organic blends as long as I can afford it.

Doesn't phase me tbh, pot isn't a big deal here. IF they test you/baby at the hospital and it comes back positive, all they do is not allow you to breastfeed while at the hospital. They don't call child protective services or anything.
Still kinda crazy though!

The article said something about the chemical in the washes changes the way the test works and shows up positive. Not that it actually affects the baby at all, though.

.........
I've used two of the washes in the article. I'm sure LO was tested at birth, because I know my hospital tested pregnant women all the time, so why not the newborn, too? She didn't come back positive..... But I guess that depends on if the hospital used that prior to testing her. Just an odd thing to find out after all this time. Not like they had a reason to watch out for it.

Where in Ontario are you? The hospitals here, and in my home town call CAS if a pregnant woman or a newborn tests positive for THC.

I guess they do things differently there than. Lol

I live in Trenton, but will be delivering in Belleville since Trenton's hospital doesn't have a L&D/maternity ward. I am originally from Sarnia, and the hospital there will pretty much call CAS on you for every stupid little thing. It's nuts.

Maybe that's why it helps LO sleep so well... lol jk But that's crazy. It's so sad that those parents have to go through that even though they just used baby wash. Maybe one day marijuana will be legal and we won't have to worry about it.

How will a wash make a positive drug test? How are they drug testing a newborn so that a soap cause that?

The article said it changes the way the test works. I'm assuming it caused a color change because there's a chemical in the wash that THC also has, or something like that.

And I THINK they test pee. That'd come back quicker than blood work...

I think they might have tested LO... but I guess they didn't really care. I think they only really care of you're on probation, or a history with drugs.
Here they're more worried about meth and pills during pregnancy. I took a few hits the night before I had my c-section, I thought they'd say something but they didn't.
So either they just didn't care too much or they didn't test her.

I'm hoping they will have medical marijuana here in Alabama soon, but since we're in the "bible belt" it'll probably take forever lol. I personally see nothing wrong with it, I have never heard of someones baby being harmed by marijuana, it sure didn't hurt me or LO. the only thing that hurt me was genetic smurf lol.
