Student Dr's

posted 21st Jun '12
Do you allow them to observe or help when you are at a Dr's or hospital??

I took my daughter in to Urgent care because she had a high fever I could not get to go down and a start of a rash (She has hand foot and mouth disease)

While we were waiting to see if the strep test came back positive, the Dr brought in 2 students and asked if I minded if they could listen to DD heart murmur, which she is having surgery to correct in July, she said it would be helpful to them to hear such a strong Murmur....I agreed (I saw no issues with it as we were waiting for results anyway) DH got bugged when I told him (He stayed home with the other kids) and said, that it was not needed as she was sick and her Murmur had nothing to do with the problem....

Do you allow students, to observe, Listen, help?

For something that simple I would if they just wanted to listen to LOs heart..students are there to learn if they aren't given that opportunity they won't be very good drs. I had a student sit in when I was in labor, and one has seen my LO for a sick appointment at Pedis

Yep. The more patients that let them observe the more of a chance they have to learn something new.

I had a student doctor at every one of my appointments when I was pregnant. the only time I wish I had said no was when I delivered and that's only because it was the first live birth she had witnessed and she got a little weirded out and just made me more nervous. Other than that though I see no reason why you shouldn't let them be there, they need to learn somehow.

I let them.
the only time I had a problem with it, was when i gave birth to my son. i tore a little bit, and needed like 4 stitches. they asked if a student could watch and learn how to do it, i agreed. it took them nearly half an hour to get 4-5 stitches in! ahh.

Quoting The Doctor:" There were four of them in the room with me when I delivered. bwahaha."

Same here, that room was crowded!

So, for something much more simple like a listen, I definitely wouldn't mind. They've all got to learn through experience and if there's no risk in it, I'm all for helping them out.

I do, as long as it doesn't interfere with the care that the patient should be receiving. For example, we had a car wreck and My wrist was broken. The hospital we were taken to was a teaching hospital and they asked it a student could set my wrist. I said yes, but it took him way to many tries and it hurt so I told the doctor observing that the student needed to stop and for him to take over. I felt like he should have seen it wasn't working and stepped in way before I said anything.

I would it's not like they are asking to do surgery or something on a patient. Medical students need a lot of hand on experience.

Even with 3 of my peeps, the 4 students, my doc, and the nurse with me....

The room didn't feel crowded. It was a freaking giant room! haha

For some reason, I only remember them poking my placenta. Don't really remember them being there otherwise.

I'm having issues with student doctors at my prenatal visits... I don't mind them coming in... but I DO mind when they can't count, leer or let their hands linger too long in places they shouldn't be touching. ~.~

I had one student doc about a month ago for one of my prenatal appointments...couldn't understand a word he said, he had to go over my medical history with me apparently and couldn't figure it out.... He's like you're autistic? I'm like no... a cousin on my mom's side is... He says ohhh that's what MC means... XD Then came time to listen to baby's heart and he was wayyyyy off... He said "it's around 140 or something like that" (his exact words!)... It was really 157....

Then the other day had another student doc in...at least this one could count... he was decent... I have issues with male doctors at this point...especially for prenatal appointments...which is why I have a lady doctor... but ah well. I still couldn't understand what he was saying... lol But he was nicer... well..kinda... minus the whole "watch your weight, you're getting fat" thing... XD Duuuude, I'm pregnant... didn't you know?!?! Can't go running marathons and weight lift on a daily basis at this point. XD

I'm really hoping they don't ask if one can observe my labor... because the answer is going to be heck no! lol
