Always. They have to learn somehow.

When I was in labour with Marcus, my ob/gyn asked me if I was okay with a student ob/gyn observing and helping out. She ended up helping my ob/gyn deliver Marcus. The look on her face was priceless when she helped to deliver Marcus. It was a very special moment for her, as it was her very first delivery.

Quoting The Doctor:" There were four of them in the room with me when I delivered. bwahaha."
There were three when I delivered, and I was their first natural birth hehe. ;)

OP: I don't usually mind. The only time I said no was when I had my very first pap smear. I wasn't sure I was going to react to it so I asked if the student would please leave for that part.

Quoting Olivia Foxworth:" Do you allow them to observe or help when you are at a Dr's or hospital?? I took my daughter in to Urgent ... [snip!] ... needed as she was sick and her Murmur had nothing to do with the problem.... Do you allow students, to observe, Listen, help?"

Yup, I let them! I also let a student doctor sit in and look at my ovarian cysts... I have no issues with them learning.

What did it hurt? You were just waiting anyway. It didn't interfere with the care that you were there to receive. I would have allowed it.

Yeah, but I hate it when I am not asked permission. Especially when I am exposed (like when my pant's have to be low for an ultrasound).

Yes I allow it, Hell when I was a student nurse my daughter sliced her eyebrow open on a table so I took her to the ER. One of my classmates was rotating in the ER that night and we both stood over the doctor watching him glue my DD eye brow back together   She thought it was neat that Mommy and her classmate got to learn from her getting injured.
I would rather have student doctor's and nurses in there learning how to do something correctly then only reading about it in a book. If it happened more often there would be no need for a show like Mystery Diagnosis or what ever it's called where the doc's are freaking clueless!!

I've never said no. There are some procedures that are extremely personal though. I'm never fond of students coming into the room during OB exams or anything but it's not like they haven't seen a vagina before. I get over being uncomfortable after realizing this.

I let an RN in training remove my son's IV from his foot and apparently she thought it would be a good idea to pull the tapes off like he was a grown up...ya know really fast in one go?...
I was biting my lip almost in tears after I saw that trying not to scream at her. My son did a good enough job letting her know that was not the right way to go about it. He was furious.
If it were me I would have been ALOT more gentle about it.

In Guatemala, when you go to the ER you will be tended by students only with a resident standing by. Then, a doctor will review what they did. I was hospitalized for about a week a month ago. The students were the ones to check on us, do the IVs and just about everything. The doctor only came in once a day, in the morning, to see how we were doing.

The worst experience I had was a student did my (I don't remember what it's called in English) papsmear... is that what's called when they put that thing inside of your vagina and open it a bit to see better and run tests? That was painful! He needs more practice!! hahaha

Yikes. Never had a papsmear hurt. Mostly felt like a little brush brush done. Nothing painful. Sounds like he did!

I had 4 student male paramedics attend my homebirth 4 yrs ago.
they needed to see how to deliver a baby if needed too, I didnt mind didnt really pay too much attention to them at all.

Everyone thought I was weird that I let them but whatever. My dad was present for 2 out of 3 births...last 1 was emerg c-section so.....

SO has delivered 11 babies. His first time he wanted to faint, it would have been nice if he could have watched one before attending one!! (He is a paramedic.)

Thats why I said ok to them watching....Heck they could have added more, I felt bad for them though it was a brutal birth lol my mom and dad and bd had to leave the room no one could stand how much I was going through...I told them to leave me lol and take a walk everyone was on edge lol. She was stuck in the birth canal forever they were about to bring me to the hospital but instead they flipped me on my hands and knees and the midwife shoved her hand up me and pulled her out and that alone took almost a half hour, her shoulder was stuck.

She was not breathing when she came out.....but they did all they needed too and she will be 4 yrs old this July and is happy and healthy with no injuries at all.
The paramedics had a real scarry first delivery that they will never forget lol
