re: Fast Food allowed to encourage overeating

Most senior citizens that I have come in contact with NEVER go out to eat. Because when most of them were young, during the great depression, there was no extra money to go eat out.

A few years ago we quit drinking soda and eating fast food. We agreed to eat out once a month, but at a sit-down place. We took a road trip about a month or two after starting this and we were so sick to our stomachs after eating. It was amazing to see how badly our bodies reacted to that stuff.

yup...

i never knew how much nasty food i ate as an american until i stopped eating it long enough to realize what utter crap it is once i returned... i shudder inwardly when i see the threads of young pregnant women on here craving the various horribly fast foods and gimmicky pre-made food products that exist out there.

and after being pregnant and now bfing, i can't help but be fairly obsessed w/ what i put in my body as fuel -- i think there are loads and loads of health problems (psychological as well as physical) that we experience as a result of what we put in our bodies... we simply don't know the long term and subtler results of eating cheetohs, happy meals, and tv dinners as daily staples.

i mean, think about it, our bodies have evolved to digest a fairly basic array of "natural" foods over the last 50,000 years or so -- including meats, grains, fruits, and vegatables.

now, w/in the past 50 - 80 years, we've got all these new chemical and molecular compounds and processed foods which we consume and ingest into our blood streams on a daily basis.

i can guarentee you that one generation is not remotely enough time to evolve our livers, kidneys, and guts to handle the dubious by-products of digesting preservatives, MSG, high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, genetically modified fruits and vegatables and whatever other processed foodstuff we glibly expose ourselves to-- trusting that b/c it tastes edible, smells good, and doesn't look rotten, it must be good enough to eat.

that logic worked for our ancestors but it surely does NOT work now in this day and age.

from allergies to to ADHD, cancer and diabetes, and many many other disorders, would be alleviated if not outright improved if our bodies weren't forced -- on a daily basis, to try and effectively breakdown all of the foreign compounds we mindlessly consume.

geeze, i mean even those plastics (you know, the unbreakable nalgene bottles) the canadians are now banning-- used to be standard fair for the hippies to store their water in.

we've got to be more critical about what we assume is safe to eat... our brains are big enough to figure it out.

Not everyone knows about the harmfulness of MSG, high fructose corn syrup, or many others and even if they looked it up, they may not understand what they are reading. So, simply put, what would you suggest women (or people in general) trying, in your opinion, to better themselves, food-wise?

All grocery stores have a general setup. You usually hit the produce first, then meats, dairy, and bread. All the more whole foods will be located on the perimeter of the market. Avoid the center isles, if possible. If it's pre-cooked, boxed, or any thing of that nature, it's probably full of MSG's, high fructose, unsafe preservatives, etc. Btw, not all preservatives are bad. There are natural preserves and chemical.

Example: Say you buy a can of pineapples instead of fresh due to budjet. That's fine. Rinse the fruit free of the high fructose syrup that may surround it. You may not eliminate all the syrup, but you are definetely cutting it down.

I really hate knowing that most of the stuff I ingest isn't really food. And my body is really protesting against it. Obesity is a serious problem and it comes from eating all this artificial stuff we are passing off as food. And I don't feel like I can do anything about it, but that's excuses. It's just a matter of changing a habit, which is not easy but possible.

I read in Discover awhile back that obesity is increasing in countries that have never had it before due to American food exports. The most common guilty partyis sugary sodas.

As I sit here with a Fanta on my desk, justifying that "At least it doesn't have caffeine" ... it's frustrating ... only I can change it but I don't

My suggestion is to eat real food...cut out (or cut back on) pre-made, ready-made, boxed foods. Eat food that is in it's original form...fruits, vegetables, whole grains (you can read on the package for 100% whole grain which means the fiber-richbran and germis still present.) Eat lean meats, beans, eggs...and less hot dogs and other processed meats.

My boyfriend eats ALOT, and I mean...ALOT.

But he does not gain weight !! And about that box...He would probably eat it all by himself if I let him, but no...the taco is for me, and I better get one of the cinnamon stix! Lol. We also usually get a large drink for the both of us.

what's worked for me is label recognition...

i try to ask myself i could make it at home w/ the ingredients i have -- if not, then you're looking at food that's already over processed. the funny/sad thing is that it's really hard to avoid these foods in safeway and other standard grocery chains.

basically, i try to avoid any foods that contain words/ingredients i don't recognize. and of course i avoid high fructose corn syrup, MSG, and hydrogenated fats whenever possible.

ughhh...this is totally off topic but since it's my own thread, here goes. I haven't eaten KFC since we were driving and saw some PETA protesters out in front of the KFC and they were waving signs that said "KFC tortures chickens!" and I looked it up on the internet and saw that it's true...they don't follow the rules that they're supposed to in treating/killing the chickens humanely. Not that I'm a big animal nut, in fact I think PETA is full of nutjobs, but I haven't been able to eat there since. That was a year ago.

I heard they pressure-cooked the chicken and didn't really fry it. I didn't really look to see if it was true or not, but after that it didn't really hold much appeal to me. The only fried chicken I like is my mother's anyway.
