re: Fast Food allowed to encourage overeating

I can say I personally wouldn't want to live until 120 but I sure as hell don't want to die at 54 either.

I think a big problem is all the positive memories and good feelings coming from all the fast food and all soo many of the foods that don't have the extra stuff costs more most of the time. It's easier for people to buy things when they're on a budget that's really tight because they would rather eat than worry about the MSG, high fructose anything and getting fat.

That is SUCH a good movie!!

unfortunately, you've hit the nail on the head.

it's cheaper -- in terms of mass production to always use preservatives, fructose, sucrose, and other man-made/processed products than to make foods the way they naturally are (e.g. bread w/out preservatives). so the companies have a vested interest in using preservatives b/c their product can stay on the shelves longer (which increases the chance of it selling and giving them a profit).

also, if you create flavors and tastes that are designed to play on our taste buds in a way that is more enjoyable than the natural version of (e.g. doritoes, ranch dressing, bbq sauces and so on), you can ensure a greater profit over time as people become addicted to the "high flavor" versions of food, which make non-MSG and otherwise flavor enhanced food products taste boring in comparison.

This topic got me thinking, so I went and started looking at the ingredients of foods in my kitchen.

It made me sad when I saw high fructose corn syrup in my whole wheat bread.

Where can I find something like bread that is made from all natural ingredients? Do I have to make it myself, or just go to the local bakery? I'd love to buy fruit and veggies from a farmers market, but I have no idea how to find one. Besides that, the grocery store is so convenient! Blah

I just looked at my bread, and I must say, I'm shocked. I didn't believe that it had HFCS in it, but it does! It also has Hydrogenated Soybean Oil!

i know! it's crazy.

i was getting pissed yesterday at the grocery store b/c i couldn't buy canned peaches that weren't stored in sucrose or fructose-- even the "eat right" brand was "packed in sucrose". in austria, you could always choose between peaches packed in water or syrup.

I've always hated the syrup they pack fruit in. Since I was a kid I've dumped it out, but I'm sure the fruit absorbs enough to make you mildly diabetic. Hrmph.

Yes, yay! We have a Trader Joes that is almost as close as the regular grocery store. I'm definitely going to check it out!

Thank you!
