Gain more weight??

posted 20th Jun '12
I am 33 weeks pregnant and I am already over weight without being pregnant, so I have tried to gain as little weight as possible to stay healthy. Every time I go see my dr she tells me my baby is measuring big but she wants me to gain more weight. I have gained a total of 3 lbs this whole pregnancy. If the baby is already measuring big why would I gain extra weight that I DO NOT need??

I'm not a doctor, but if you were already over weight before pregnancy you probably wouldn't NEED to gain weight. Did you ask her why you needed to gain more weight?

How far along are you? How much did you weigh prior to pregnancy and what was your height?

Oh yeah and if you read a lot of sites and pregnancy sites they say if you are over weight you should probably be only gaining about 10-15 lbs anyways so your totally fine and LOL i'm def. no Dr. either but as long as your eating good and doing some exerciser which clearly you have done great for 33 weeks dont stress

"Ask your health care provider how much weight you should gain during pregnancy. A woman of average weight before pregnancy should gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. Underweight women should gain 28-40 pounds during pregnancy. Overweight women may need to gain only 15-25 pounds during pregnancy. You may need to gain more or less weight, depending on what your health care provider recommends.
In general, you should gain about 2 to 4 pounds during your first three months of pregnancy and 1 pound a week for the remainder of your pregnancy. If you are expecting twins you should gain 35 to 45 pounds during your pregnancy. This would be an average of 1 ½ pounds per week after the usual weight gain in the first three months.
Where Does the Extra Weight Go During Pregnancy?

Baby 8 pounds

Placenta 2-3 pounds

Amniotic fluid 2-3 pounds

Breast tissue 2-3 pounds

Blood supply 4 pounds

Fat stores for delivery and breastfeeding 5-9 pounds

Uterus increase 2-5 pounds

Total 25 to 35 pounds"

In some cases when a women is very overweight, it is safe to lose weight during pregnancy under the supervision of a medical provider. However, in most cases women should not try to lose weight during pregnancy.

I am 5ft 8 and I was 205 when I got pregnant. She told me that I didn't have any health risks as of now when I asked her why she wanted me to gain more weight and that she would feel more comfortable with me gaining more because my first baby was small. I gained more weight with my first though and wasn't over weight at that time. I wanted to cry when she told me to gain more LOL but I don't think I need any extra weight

I am 6'0 tall and weighed 270 before i got preg and my doctor told me he expected me to gain 25 to 30 lbs on top of that. I am currently 34 1/2 weeks preg and at my last visit was up 15 lbs. I gained 7 lbs in 2 weeks and it was all baby. Your doctor knows what is best for you.

I hope so I am just scared my baby will be too big. I had a natural delivery the first time and I would like to keep it that way the second time. A C-section does not sound like fun especially when you have a toddler

I have been warned of health risks for me alone gaining 50 more pounds at in point in my life, so what happens i get pregnant before i even get a chance to loose weight. My first question to my doctor was "how much should i gain since i'm over weight anyway" Her responce 30lbs! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! i'm starting this process off at 185, if i gain 50 more at any point in my life you told me i would become diabetic and you want me to gain 30 of those 50lbs! I'm at 25w5d and i've gained around 13 pounds. My baby is fine, i'm fine. Do what you think is best! It freaks me out even without health risks to gain 30lbs for a baby. but i've seen/heard ppl say they have gained 65lbs and even 80lbs! And their children were 5-7lbs at birth! The one thing i don't understand is for bigger ppl they need to measure us at our first appointment. Bc they are telling you the baby is measuring big, but they aren't taking into consideration how big we were to start with! It's not like all the fat in our bellys just goes away and it's all baby!

I know what you mean. I am wanting to have my baby natural but they are thinking she is going to be big. Her estimated weight at my last visit and I was almost 33 weeks was 4 lbs 12 oz. The visit before that she weighed about 3 lbs 8 oz so that was a lb 4 oz in 2 weeks. My doctor is thinking she is going to be big. Keep your head up mama everything will work out and be fine.

chances are that she is concerned for YOUR health. Babies will take what they need to grow, even if it means they are taking it from your bones and other vital systems. I'm in the same boat, I was still carrying around 30 extra pounds of baby weight from my first baby when I found out that #2 was on the way. My doc said our goal was for me to not gain more than 15 pounds if I could help it because of my family history of heart related issues, but he said that he didn't want me to NOT gain any weight because baby needs nutrients and so do I. Maybe ask your doc why she wants you to gain more weight, it could have something to do with your iron levels or something that came up in a blood or urine test and she just didn't explain WHY well enough...it can happen. Sometimes doctors expect us to read their minds because they see people all day every day for the same thing. In any case- I hope you have a happy healthy baby and that the rest of your pregnancy goes off without a hitch!
