Hospital procedures you can deny/delay

posted 20th Jun '12
I am having a hospital birth and I was curious as to wha procedures I could delay or deny both right after baby is born and during our stay. I will be discharged as soon as possible, but I didn't know what could be done. I want this to be the best experience I have had yet, and I'm hoping to go completely natural   I just didn't know of a place that could tell me what had to be done for baby and what could wait. BF and bonding is really important to me. Thanks

you can deny/delay anything
ex- induction, c-section, vaccinations after birth

You can refuse the Hep B shot, but I'm almost positive the Vitamin K shot and the eye ointment are mandatory (that's how it is where I work). You can also request that the baby room in with you, instead of sleeping in the nursery.

That's nice. I specified that's how it is where I work.

Thanks, that's why I'm trying to gather information on what I can do to make my birth plan. I definitely think I don't want the eye ointment. What about as soon as baby is born? Like the weighing, measuring, etc.? I want to BF as soon as possible

You can BF as soon as possible. They have to assess the baby first, and check the 1 and 5 minute APGAR scores, but as soon as they're done with that, you can BF. They can take the baby back to the nursery later.

My other two never went to the nursery till the evening (I don't remember how long I held each right after, thats why I want everything in my birth plan)

Just try to stay open-minded. There's nothing wrong with making a birth plan, but everything might not go just as planned. I wanted to BF right away, but they took my LO right to NICU. I never imagined that would happen.

I had a birth plan with my first, with options for if things changed, that DH would stay with the baby, etc. I know not everything goes according to plan, but I want to be as informed as possible because I feel I was so uneducated iwth my first two. My daughter I didn't have a birth plan and it was a good experience, I really want the bonding/bf time and to be with my baby. I was worried with her because they had more people on hand because of meds i took (no epi) but my dr. wasn't concerned and she was just fine thankfully

My kids never left to go anywhere after they were born. As long as the birth goes normal anything they need to check with the baby can be done with the baby right on your chest. You can ask for delayed weighing and stuff too. It's your birth so you really can do what you feel is right for you. We requested alot of things that were differnt from the hospitals regular protocal for our babies births and we didn't do all with my son but with my daughter we were able to do everything as we had wanted. Including asking the hosptial staff to leave me my husband and doula alone most of the time, eating when I wanted too, pushing and delevering on my hands and knees, reaching down and grabbing the baby and having immediate and uninterupted skin to skin, no eye goo, no needles, no pitocin after delivery, delayed cord clamping until the cord stopped pulsating, delayed bath, and taking home my placenta  . Haha I think they thought we were a little crazy but I was happy to birth the way I felt comfortable, and happy. So there are a lot of things that you can request and change!
