how do you cut your food bill--what do you pay a month?

posted 19th Jun '12
so this month we spend over 600 in groceries and we have like NO food left, and theres still over a week left in the month.

theres 2 adults, 2 kids that eat food, and one that eats formula and baby food (he is only on his second can of formula this month tho, and we just opened it, so formula is not racking up our bill)

we grill out ALOT. were not big red meat eaters, more chicken, turkey burgers, sometimes pork, sometimes steak, never hamburger.

big on fresh veggies and fruit

any help?

do you plan out your dinner menus or just go shopping and buy what sounds good?

a little of both, i usually go once a week. i have a few dinners in my mind and i buy the stuff for that, but we end up running to the grocery store at least once more that week, if not twice, to pick up more stuff/different stuff for dinner.

well meal planning is very important when trying to save money on groceries. it helps me from not buying junk food we don't need. I plan out my entire grocery list before I go shopping I buy for 4 people to eat and spend under $400 a month and cook every night well balanced meals.

I have the same issue. I spend roughly $600 on groceries per month. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to decrease that amount.

We spend 4-5 a month on groceries for a family of 4. That's well balanced meals 3x a day. I just plan out my meals. I just shopped for the week and spent 113$ but my daddy grows a huge garden so soon it will cut down bc my fruits and veggies will come from there.

I'd say planning is the most important also. For instance, if I want to make taco's one night I'll buy :
1 lb. of hamburger
tortillas
cheese
sour cream
lettuce/tomato

Then use 1/2 lb for tacos and the other 1/2 lb for spaghetti. Then i'll use the sour cream for baked potatoes and lettuce for salad for a lunch time or quick dinner. Then I'll use the left over taco shells for cheese quesadillas for a snack. So thats around 3 dinners or 3 snacks using the same ingredients for all 3. I purposely make my menu very interchangeable because it saves a lot of money.

Our grocery budget includes all toiletries and fast food and is $600/month for two adults and a 2.5 year old. We always have stuff to make and honestly if we cut back on fast food, it would probably be closer to $500.
