gestational diabetes?

How do you know if you have or are at risk for gestational diabetes? How bad is it for the mother and the baby?

your doc will do a test around 27 weeks. it's really managable, most often with diet or possibly insulin pills. i failed my first test, and i'm waiting for the results of my 3 hour test. i may have it... i'm not worried, though, because many women get it, and it is managable.

are you required to take shots?

I have to go for a three hour glucose test this Monday.

I had a one hour one a couple weeks ago and my sugar was a little high, but I'm sure that's because I didn't remember I was going in for a glucose test (I thought it was just regular bloodwork) and I had two huge bowls of ice cream earlier in the day.

it depends on how high your sugar is, and if you can manage it with diet or pills or not.

i was ok when i took mine on monday, except the drink made my throat close up cuz it was so sweet!

I found out the other day that I had a BUNCH of sugar in my urine... and the nurse forgot to give me my glucose drink, or put it on the paperwork that gets sent to the lab (at my 28 week apt.) so yesterday at my 32 week apt. my doc asked how the glucose test went because the results weren't showing up on his computer, and I was like umm I had that done at 12 weeks. (he was VERY upset, not with me) Then he told me he wanted me to do the 1 hour test to make sure I don't have GD...still waiting for results. Hopefully they don't call. =[

im 34 1/2 weeks, ive been dealing with it since i was 28.
mainly, they'll have you go to a diabetes center and then they'll have you go to a nutritionist... you'll get a sugar meter where they'll have you poke yourself and test your blood 4 times a day and write down your sugar levels, for me, anything over 140 i have to write what i ate.
what it is, is you have to limit your carbs.
my nutritionist has restricted me to 30 carbs for breakfast, 15 for a snack, 60 for lunch, 15 for snack, 60 for dinner, and 15 for my last snack.
it's so hard because everything has carbs pretty much. and you can't be like "oh i'll skip 2 snacks so i can have 30 extra for dinner" which sucks. .. it's madness, but it's worth it.

i told my mom that she needs to bring me a big fat chocolate cake to scarf down after i give birth.

I found out now that I failed my 3 hour test thatI had gestational diabetes....I now have to prick myself 5 times a day...and anyting over 200 I have to call my dr.

I also have to worry about my sugar a lot this next week bc my dr's partner gave me the steriod shot and well that increases your blood sugar for a week...my dr was so pissed he gave it to me. now I am worried about that...having gestational diabetes slows down the development of the babies lungs....and can cause you to have a big baby....If you think you have it...I would stop drinking juice, soda and sweet teas....go to water, diet soda...esp if you can get one with splenda...here in FL publix brand diet is all splenda....and then I have the splenda sugar packets that are rasberry to add to water.

as for foods to eat....stop eating like white bleached foods...IE rice, potatoes etc. get whole wheat and make sure its made with 100% whole wheat...it breaks down slower and doesnt cause blood sugar to raise....also look at basically a south beach or atkins diet...high in protein...low in carbs and sugar...hope that helps...and you don't have to go through what I have so far and if you do have it DONT get steriods!!!

and monitor your BP bc sometimes BP gets higher due to sugar

I was considered at risk after the 3-hr GTT test. the results at hr 2 and 3 were slightly high. The doctor had me consult with the nutritionist and now I also have to do the blood test 4 times a day.

Today is the first day of monitoring myself.Starting the day with a good number of 85, but it's getting higher after I had my frappucino   in the afternoon. I think this is quite good, so that you can adjust your diet and keep sugar level under control
