airbags and pregnancy

posted 7th May
i heard that airbags are really dangerous for pregnant woman and that when they go off they can easily terminate a pregnancy. does anyone else know anything about this? is it legal to turn them off somehow? is there a switch?
i really don't feel like riding in the backseat for the entire pregnancy and what about when i'm behind the wheel?

Turn an airbag off? So would you rather run the risk of you dying, ASWEL AS your baby, by doing that?

You can get them disabled, but it costs quite a bit, you would probly have to contact a dealership to do it... And as far as I know its not illegal. And yes, airbagsdetonating can bedangerous, hence the reason some Drs tell women not to drive past a certain point in pregnancy (well, at least I had one that did). I think thats really a personal call tho. How big of a chance do you think there is that you will be in an accident that makes your airbag go off??

There is not a switch that you can turn off. Stop being so paranoid. getting in a serious accident where the airbags deploy is a bad accident the airbag may not hurt the baby but the accident itself. Just stop driving then you avoid the risk but you may be crossing the street and it happens. you just have to be careful. Stop scaring yourself.

some vehicles have a key you can use to shut the airbags off.

ok first off i am TERRIFIED of airbags...i have had one go off in my face and burn my whole right side of my face and it even knocked me out...if the airbag wouldn't have went off i wouldn't have had any injuries except for a bruise from the seatbelt...but i was also the passenger not the driver...now if i'm the one driving the car there is a VERY big risk that the airbag deploying with break my neck b/c i am so short and have to sit kinda close to the steering wheel...
You can take the airbag out if you really want but it could blow up in your face while you are trying to take it out, no one will mess with your airbags b/c it is illegal to "tamper" with them in anyway...

As for them hurting the baby...they don't really deploy down low it's more up in the air...it may burn your belly b/c they come out really fast and hot but i haven't ever heard of an airbag terminating a pregnancy, ya the baby isn't going to be happy about it happening but they are VERY well protect inside you

What i do is i sit as far back as my legs and arms can reach and then move the steering wheel to it's up most position so it isn't facing my belly as much. maybe try that?

Good luck with whatever you do..watch out for crazies on the road!!

a friend of mine was almost two weeks overdue (her belly was practically touching the steering wheel)and was involved in a fender bender, but it was enough to make her airbag deploy causing her to lose her baby. Driving early in your pregnancy shouldn't be that dangerous but you should be careful when driving in your third trimester. Obviously the bigger you are the greater the danger would be if your airbag deployed.
