internal & external dilation ?! im super confused

so i tested positive for pre term labor & i have been getting checked for dilation every few days at first it was 0 then i was half a cm external dilated & now im half a cm external & 1 cm internal the doctor said she could feel the babys head . my question is if my internal keeps dilating will my external keep dilating as well ? im very confused by this ..

You dilate from the inside out like a funnel. it starts on the inside (internal) before it can be felt on the outside. Thats normal. i just ran in to the same queatoon a few weeks ago. Hope that helps

so if my internal is 1 full cm & my external is only half a cm dose that mean my external is going to get to 1 cm soon? i am still having painful contractions & i know that is what can dilate you ..

Most likely yes. it depends on how efaced you are. It will not necessarily dilate at the same rate both internally and externally though. thats why the vaginal ultrasounds are the only accurate way to check you. if the contractions are consistent and painful and its still too early if def call your dr because things can change very quickly once they start.

as far as i know im not effaced at all , they said im dilated but still thick . they are going to start doing ultrasounds on me this week to watch for it .

I was taken to the hospital last night because of contractions that were very painful and coming 1 min apart i was only dialated a finger tip but my problem is i dont dialate i never have been able to and this is my 3rd child but they wouldnt listen to me. They sent me home and im still having very painful contractions and im only 32 weeks. And is also very hard for my water to break as well. Good luck to you.

this will be my first child so im not sure if i will be having any issues but so far i have been dilating more & more for 3 days but its been moving very slowly which is a good thing i guess considering im only 32 weeks the contractions suck though . my doctor offered me narcotics for the pain but i refused them .

If you have any doubts go back in! I've made more than a couple trips for early labor myself. if they catch it early enough they can often slow it down or stop it. good luck!
