Children and Welfare

posted 17th Jun '12
I'm going to reserve my own opinion for now, this is going to be a post and run. But my question is this: Do you think that our government (US) should be able to restrict the number of children you can have if you live on welfare? And why do you feel this way?

This is a friendly debate, no drama please. No bashing other's opinions, because we've all got them.
Discuss away ladies!

No. Just no. I may not agree with people popping out kid after kid while leeching the system, but it's their reproductive organs and their right as a human being.

Nope, I dont think our govt should have any say in our reproductive organs. Including and not limited to controlling how many children people have.

In Maine it is a lifetime limit of 60 months for any family member associated. So, if you have 5 kids and you hit 60 months on the first 2 kids. You don't get benefits here for the 3rd, 4th or 5th child.

Well, it is quite obvious that some women use the system. They keep having babies so they can get more food stamps, and in my state they passed a restriction that only pregnant ladies can have free medical coverage for dental and optometrist appointments. So it's even more abused. I'm not sure if they should put a limit on it though. I don't think they could get away with it anyways. I do think that there are a lot of people abusing the welfare system though.

No, I dont think its right to take anyones rights away to have children just because they are poor. The government should do other things to make it 'harder' to be on welfare.

Now crack heads like the one my sister tells me about who has had 4 babies, all born addicted to crack and she lost custody to everyone of them....She Should Be Fixed...like a dog.

I think the dollar amount should be restricted. Like only allowing the amount to raise for the first child you give birth to while on welfare. Too many people keep popping out babies too get more money.

Nope. It's their body! No one but themselves should regulate how many kids they can have.

ETA: My state has a 48mo lifetime limit. You can have 20 kids but once mom has been on welfare for her 48mo then everyone benefits expire. For cash benefits, the only people that are eligible are people who've been on the case for the first 10mo. Anymore kids beyond that doesn't get cash benefits, only food stamps & Medi-cal.

So, it wouldn't make sense for them to restrict here for welfare anyway. It is a useless law. Like they said who should have control over how many kids we reproduce?! The government is not god!

There is already a max on how much money you get, and a time limit you qualify, so after like 3 kids the money and food does not increase, so what difference does it make

No not at all because not everyone on welfare are lazy. There are many reason why a person is on that as for me I can no longer work due to back injuries also my first daughters father never has seen her as she's about to turn 5 and now as he pays for child support I was granted other benefits as well and government has no control the government wouldn't even care to take the time on who's doing what and who's having babies it is what it is !!

Majority of people forget that welfare is mainly for the CHILDREN. Alot of people also don't know that there IS a time limit on welfare & you DO have to "follow rules" (such as looking for work, volunteering, or other things) to continue getting a check. Also, here in CA, if you're on welfare & you have another child, your money doesn't go up. & If you have a child & were on welfare any of the 10 months prior of birth, you also won't get anymore money for having 2 children.

I work at the welfare office & it's changed my view on "welfare people" ALOT.
That being said, no I don't think the government should dictate how many children a person can have just because they are "poor". (don't forget alot of people work full time & still qualify for welfare)...

Exactly what I mean by people bitching about welfare but not knowing the facts. In the state we both live in (CA), if you have more children while being on welfare in any of the 10 months prior to the childs birth, you don't get more money.

This.
And they seem to think by having more kids that they will automatically have money to spend to raise them.
