You need to find out if the pedi takes call at the hospital you are delivering at. With my first he didn't so the on call dr saw her and then she saw her pedi at 2 wks. I delivered at a diff. hospital this time and my babies ped was in the c-section with us, it was great.

Our hospital asked who we used and would have called them. Our ped. office doesn't come to the hospital I delivered at, so the hospital ped. saw her and faxed all of her info when we left. I hope this helps! Good luck !

I was told (and this is what I did as well) once you find a pediatrician that accepts your insurance and is accepting new patients, all you have to do is when you go in to have the baby they'll ask you if you have a pediatrician. Just tell them who and they will call either that pediatrician after the baby is born or whoever is on call for that dr if it is after hours or the weekend.

I actually went in a month before my due date and talked to a few doctors. I called an made an appointment for an interview.
I asked any questions that I wanted to know such as vaccines, calling hours, their opinions on certain things ect.
The hopsital also should have an on call doctor to do an over all evaluation of your baby when he/she is born. The doctor I choose for my daughter was actually the doctor who did rounds at the hospital.

So when you call and ask the basic info and they take your insurance and all....what do you say? Like, you know what i mean.....You don't make an appointment or anything right? Just say i would love for that person to be our peditrician you know? I feel so dumb....lol.

Call the number on your insurance card. They can give you a list of preferred providers. Once you have that, you can google the doctors to read reviews about them. All of their education and credentialing information will also be available.

Don't feel dumb. Ask if they are taking new patients. If they are, ask what their procedure is for a new baby. They will be glad to talk to you.

Also, ask a trusted medical professional for recommendations...I asked our OB (who's great!) and our ped. that she recommended is amazing !

If you want to talk to the doctor before you have your baby the office should allow you to come in for an interview of the doctor. I spoke with 4 different doctors before I made a desicion on one.
You can ask them at that time if they accept your insurance (while your making the interview appointment) if you don't want to talk to them before hand then just verifiy insurance and ask if they come to the hopsital. When you check into the hopsital when your in labor they will ask you for the name of the doctor.
If you want to know which doctor makes rounds at the hopsital call there and ask who the pediatrician is.

I didn't know what to look for either with my first, and ended up getting lucky. We just went to the pediatrician that came to the hospital (she was on call) and she ended up being awesome, and I found out later that a lot of my friends use her adn they lov her. most doctors will say that they aren't accepting new patients, but soemtimes you can get in anyways being that its a newborn. My Dr. is full now, but is still going to accept the new baby when its born, because both my girls go there.

after you find out who your insurance covers then you can call all who you want to basically interview (as many as you like) and then you pick who is best for you...remember to ask stuff like:
do they do after hour calls
who will see your baby if they arent in
is it hard to get in for sick visits and well baby checks
and any other ?'s you may have

I didnt bother with Pedi's till after the baby was born. In the hospital they gave me a book of Pedi's in the area and all I had to do was call and set up the first appointment which was at 2 weeks. I could have also chosen the hospital Pedi if I wanted but I prefered not to have to go to the hospital for every visit just a clinic.
