stinger in foot

Last week my son must have stepped on and got stung by something. My friend pulled the stinger out and it was like an inch long! My poor son was in pain and it swelled some but otherwise ok. The next day seemed perfectly normal, but swollen. Well now like a week later I look and realize it looks like part of the stinger is STILL in there. Do I just leave it be and it will work its way out on its own or what?? Doesnt seem to be bothering him at all, I can just see it through the skin.

If it's not infected I would just leave it. no reason to irritate your son or the wound if it's healing on its own.
