posted 7th May
Hi ladies.. Well I have one child he is my miracle...he is 3 and he says some things well and others eeerrr...... gibbesrish. I spoke to my doctor and he said since he was a preemie he might do things a little later..( Born at 34 weeks) which comforts me.. but he is 3! I went to a friends house she has 2 kids one about 6 and a 3 yr old and it looks like the 6 yr old passed all his school knowledge to the 3 yr old which made my son look bad. I felt so bad with all the critisicm she gave me.. that my child should be doing more stuff.. I was a teacher so I have tought him the numbers, colors, names to object alphabet from A-D and oh his body parts..he can even draw a face ears eyes nose hair arms and legs.. he knows daddy and him have "wee wees" and mommy "no wee wee"..  !!! . He is a smart little boy but I can't help but get worried when even my husband comes to me and sais our son is speaking gibberish. I was told all first borns are like that especially since they have no siblings.. is that true?. Should I be concerned.. my doc keeps saying he is normal and ok...so why I worry so much?.. Anyone experiencing the same thing? Any Advice?.. Im a stay at home mom so he doesnt see much of other children unless we take him to the park and he makes friends..... he interacts really well with other children but uts the gibberish that concerns me.. oh and at McDonalds my son is the only child that doesnt want to play in the play area.. my son is terrified of bigger kids.. cuz they push him a round..... Oh ladies any advice for peace of mind?

I would not worry too much about it. I have several friends whos kids still spoke gibberish... Only one of them needed speech therapy in elementary school. My son still spoke some gibberish, but he was learning2 languages (spanish & english). So if the Dr said not to worry, don't.

If your doctor says not to worry, then I wouldn't.
However just to give you some of my experience, my brother has slight autisim, which affects his speech and social skills. When it comes to school he excels in everything. He is in regular kindergarten, but has a paraprofessinal with him all day to help him focus in school.

I have an 8 yr. old son that didn't talk in complete sentences until he was about 3 and a half, and now he won't stop talking back to me! lol When he started Kindergarten he was automatically enrolled in a twice a week speech class that helped with his pronunciations and a lil stuttering. Now he's in 2nd grade and almost done with his speech class with no more stuttering. It's just his "R's" that he has trouble pronouncing. I would just say speak to a speech counselor about it if you're really worried about it. As long as he can still communicate in other ways to you, things should be ok. I know how you feel. I was always worried about my son and compared him to other kids too. Now he's soooo smart and I'm very proud. All kids start their milestones at different times. My son also took awhile to potty train. About your friend, she really shouldn't make you feel bad about him. Like I said everyone is different, and I notice alot of girls speaking sooner than boys. Maybe your son is a lil shy? Mine was like that too until he started school. But he still likes to be by himself too at times. Good luck!

All kids develop differently but at 3 he should be talking in sentences. Call your local school district and ask for him to be evaluated by the child study team. And if he qualifies they can give your son many programs to help him free of charge. My sons school district sends him out of district to a $140,000 private school (which they pay) because they dont have any programs to fit his special needs. Good luck

Just my case too.. my son is bilingual too.. Spanish and English. could that be it?.. Oh I think my husband makes me even more concerned cuz I do understand my son.. (maybe cuz I'm with him all day while hubby is at work?) so my hubby seems not to understand my son and I have to translate literally..so I think thats what has been having me so worried...
thanks hun... I really appreciate your reply!

Have u thought about seeing if he could get a speech therapist? i had a speech therapyst come in from a company named building blocks and they got him off the jibberish and got him to say sentences. it took a couple of weeks but it was worth it. my son as a infant spoke more(mama papi dada jugo leche etc etc) then he did when he was 1&1/2. And my son was very timid and didnt want to walk until he was 16mo so i had my hands full with him.i raised my childrenbilingual and they are def. benefiting from it now!

I used to have that same situation with my youngest. He spoke, and I understood 90% of what he would say, but I'd have to translate to his father, and even my in-laws... lol. I think the amount of time you spend with him helps you "bond" with his use of language. No worries though, soon enough you won't be able to shut him up

He may also just like to hear the sound of his own voice... My youngest would babble nonsense waaay after he was a toddler, and he certainly entertained himself with it... especially in the car.

My hubby cannot understand our daughter either... It is bc you spend more time with him and YES learning 2 languages WILL affect their speech... But remember, its not about what they can say, but how much they UNDERSTAND. If he understands everything you say to him, then what he can say is less of an issue bc he is trying to work out 2 dif pronunciations and vowels and such in his head. He'll be fine... Nik to this day still always pronounces "v"s with a "b" sound bc he learned spanish "first" if you will LOL

I agree with this and furthermore, every kid develops at their own pace... You cannot set the standard for one child by what another child does. Moreover, in my personal exp, the kid really was not as great as the parent says they are/were, but they are betting on you not being able to prove dif. A friend of mine swore her daughter (who is 4 months younger than mine) was speaking in full sentences when Rachel was first starting to say understandable words... A few weeks later we spent a day with all of our kids playing and I did not hear a single intellegible word come out of her mouth all day much less an actual sentence... And her mom did not even understand her!!!! So don't listen to that junk.
