smurf you episiotomy scar!

posted 15th Jun '12
I was at stay-and-play with LO this morning and was having a chat with one of the staff members about me trying for a natural birth with this LO.
She said if I tore or had an episiotomy with Laila's birth I would have to have another one hence i would want an epidural. She was forced into another episiotomy for that reason even though she wanted to go drug free.

She's like in her late 40's im assuming this is outdated information.

But it still made my heart sink a little bit. Seriously if anyone comes near my vagina with a pair of scissors again I am kicking them in the smurfing face.

Im scared now! no doctor would do an episiotomy for that reason these days right?

I had one with my first born, but didn't with my second. I think her information is a little outdated..

If I'm tearing, I'd rather them come at me with scissors than get a jagged tear.
I always tore though   extensively.

I would guess it's outdated, but I COULD see that being an issue. I mean, scar tissue doesn't stretch the way regular tissue does, so I could see it upping your odds of needing one. I don't think it's a for sure though.

I had one with my first. With my second I tore (which was way better then being cut btw). With my third and fourth I didn't get cut or tear at all. She's wrong.

That word makes me cringe. I'm so glad they stayed away from my V to my A with those scissors!

My understanding is that is not true. A regular tear will heal faster and better then a cut. It will be harder to stitch, but heal better. That's what I read "back in the day" when I was looking all this up though.

A small tear is fine, but I tore, with Kareem, from elbow to smurf  With all my kids I started to tear and when it got to be more than minimal, the doctor was there with the scissors and I had a LOT easier time healing with those stitches than I did with Kareem. I wish he wouldn't have come so fast and the doctor would have had time to cut me.

Yeah, it may be true with really extensive tearing, I'm not sure. Are you sure the 2nd wasn't better because it wasn't as much damage? Just a guess.

I tore with both. I am bitter about this, as my 1st was only 2lbs 15oz. WTF? How fair is it that I tore? haha

Not everyone tears the 2nd time around b/c your body has been through it once already. Maybe the head is smaller this time. You never know. I know someone did mention that b/c of the scar tissue you may tear b/c it doesn't stretch as bad but hopefully you will do just fine. Are you going to have a water birth b/c I heard that helps alot! I did evening primrose oil capsules from 35 weeks to the end. I didn't do massaging but my nurse did it for me while i was pushing and I only needed one stitch. I really think it helps with softening everything down there so I didn't tear.
