I'm not a particularily paanoid person, but all the what-if's in that book really bothered me.They can and do happen-but,most of the time it's due to circumstances beyond a person's control, not because they ate a tuna sandwich or hung out by the microwave or slept with the TV on. I was left wondering how the cavemen ever managed to survive and perpetuate humankind without knowing to avoid every damn thing on the planet!

Can you cite a source that verifies that marijuana causes learning disabilities?I'm curious to read it,as I've never found any valid resources that proved that hypothesis.

That has never ever been proven. If I could smoke I would, but I can't. And if my baby does have something wrong when she/he's born then I'm not automatically going to blame it on those weeks that I did smoke. My sister's doctor (who is highly respected here in South Louisiana) could tell that my parents were smoking and he actually told them to keep smoking. And she has multiple disablitites. So obviously it can't be that bad.

I've studied loads about pot. It heightens your senses. It makes you stupid. Why does it make you stupid?

Because the cotton mouth just won't go away, and water intoxication is possible.
The munchies. Why does it take so damn long to feel full, anyway?
It makes you more likely to laugh at a ridiculous sitcom that wouldn't be funny any other time.

When I quit smoking, for a few days afterward I would start talking and just stop because I forgot what I was going to say.

Pot DOES slow you down. And the effect it has on short term memory is undeniable.

If my child suddenly needs to go to the ER and I'm NOT stoned, I'm still going to panic, and it's going to take me a few to figure out what to do. Now if that same situation occurs and I AM stoned? Oh dear god. First of all I'm not going to know what the hell to do, secondly I'm going to be completely over exaggerating the situation, and I'm also going to feel like complete shit for not being sober to know what to do for my baby.

All in all, it's up to the mother. I don't really care. But the fact remains the same, it makes you stupid, even if it is temporary...which can last for hours after coming down.

A friend of mine smoked pot the entire time she was pregnant. She had tried to quit smoking cigarettes and did for a while, but I think she still smoked a few cigarettes a week. But the she smoked pot several times a week, atleast every other day. And of course I would never judge anyone for their choices, but I wouldn't do it. I haven't cared for smoking pot for a long time, but even if I did want to i wouldn't while i was pregnant. i just don't feel it's worth the risk. Because every fetus is different. While may handle the pot fine and it not really affect their birth weight, it could cause damage to the other. My friend had a healthy baby at birth. And i finally got to meet him when he was about 8 months old..and he was a very small 8 month old and a good bit of his basic motor skills that he should atleast be able to roughly do, he couldn't do at all. Which may be due to something unrelated..who knows

lol once again a very valid point. I have an anxiety problem really bad so I sort of worry about everything. I was staying up four to five hours every night and I would worry about EVERYTHING. My fiance, bills, the baby, etc. Now that my fiance has a new job and I have seen my baby on sonogram and everything, the OB says she's fine, I really don't have anything to worry about. It was my security blanket so now I cry over commercials and stuff.

Quoting Ms. Von Fate:“ But can stupidity cause webbed fingers?”

No. I wasn't supporting the theory about webbed fingers. I was using logic. At a certain time in fetal development, the fingers and toes are webbed. Pot is a downer, that's what it's famous for...slowing you down. I was just thinking that if a mother was smoking pot at that certain point in time, the fingers or toes might not do what they're supposed to. ::shrug:: I don't exactly believe myself, but it's not impossible.

I do agree with that. It does make you stupid. But I've been stoned in emergencies before and I knew exactly what to do. And the deal with munchies, learn how to control yourself. I'm diabetic so that would have been really bad for me. It is the mother's choice, but jeebus, people need to be educated before they make judgements about something like this.

The consequences of prenatal exposure to cannabis are subtle. The impact during the course of pregnancy and upon the neonate appear to be considerably moderated by other risk factors with evidence from a number of cohorts suggesting mild effects upon fetal growth and central nervous system functioning. During the toddler stage, there is little evidence for a prenatal cannabis effect either upon growth or behavior

Lynn Zimmer & John Morgan
Studies of newborns, infants, and children show no consistent physical, developmental, or cognitive deficits related to prenatal marijuana exposure. Marijuana has no reliable impact on birth size, length of gestation, neurological development, or the occurence of physical abnormalities. The administration of hundreds of tests to older children has revealed only minor differences between the offspring of marijuana users and nonusers, and some are positive rather than negative. (...) While it is sensible to advise women to abstain from all drugs during pregnancy, the weight of evidence suggests that marijuana does not directly harm the human fetus.

Franjo Grotenhermen
It is unlikely that cannabis causes embryonic or fetal malformations. There are inconsistent epidemiological data on its effect on birth weight. There is evidence of subtle disturbances of cerebral development resulting in cognitive impairment in offspring of cannabis users. Some scientists assume such disturbances exist, while others believe that cannabis exerts no relevant negative effects. Possibly subtle cognitive marijuana-related disorders might not be observed before preschool or school age.

I don't know what it can do but, like you, I would never take the chance. Pregnancy is a great time to sort of "Grow up" if you will. I quit smoking and I'm not going back, my fiance quit smoking because his new job drug tests, and I quit weed and I'm not going back. I think that if there is any doubt than why risk it. I'm paranoid though. Seriously paranoid.
