Breastfeeding: on demand or on a schedule?
posted 13th Jun '12
Do you feed on demand or on a set schedule? Why? Did you change this according to baby's age?
I plan on breastfeeding, and I am trying to decide whether I'm going to feed on demand or on a schedule.

On demand.
Oh and the first 6-8 weeks are the hardest. Babies always want to eat more in the beginning but remember, if you can get past that then you can get past anything :]
Cluster feeding confuses a lot of woman in the beginning as well as growth spurts. Just a head up :>

On demand. I sure as hell wouldn't be ok if somebody told me I had to eat at certain times.

I fed on demand for the first 6/7 months, but then she pretty much put herself on a schedule. Not so much that she didn't decide when she wanted to eat, but that she was pretty much eating at the same times everyday... she usually nursed a bit in the morning, around lunch, before nap, after her nap, around dinner, at bed time and whenever she wanted to at night (she would usually wake up in her crib and I'd get her and bring her back to bed with me, after that she pretty much nursed and went back to sleep). I'd say by about nine months she was nursing about 4 times a day and whenever at night until I weaned her at a year.

I was leaning towards on demand
It appears to be the only way to go. I could never let my hungry baby cry & not eat!

On demand all the way. Who are we to say they can't have anything to eat when they are hungry!

On demand. Feeding on a schedule isn't good for your supply. And a baby doesn't understand having to wait to eat when they are hungry. Besides with breastfeeding there is no need to throw away the rest of a bottle if they aren't very hungry, you just put your boob away.
