diagnose with autisum

posted 13th Jun '12
is it me or does it seem as tho more and more children are being diagnosed with autism. To me it seems as though doctors are taking any little concern with a child and leading it to autisum when it can very much be something else or just nothiing at all. hmm idk, i just find it out .

I believe it's 1 in 88 are being diagnosed now. And with how difficult it can be to get testing done for it, it's really not all that over diagnosed.

Science and medical research, as well as technology are far more advanced currently than ever, thus it leads to specialists being able to diagnose precisely.

There have also been changes in the diagnostic criteria and analyses. Some argue that since the changes, awareness has also been on the rise - thus more people notice and understand, whereas previously, many had no idea what autism or the autistic spectrum was.

Also, it's not diagnosed by a regular pedi. You are often sent to several specialists to rule out any other possibility first.

Quoting MOmmy of Angelsss:" is it me or does it seem as tho more and more children are being diagnosed with autism. To me it seems ... [snip!] ... child and leading it to autisum when it can very much be something else or just nothiing at all. hmm idk, i just find it out ."

I disagree with this entirely. YES, I believe some kids are misdiagnosed, but I don't think it's more because Dr's are diagnosis a ton of kids who shouldn't be.

I've read before that when looking at adults they find autism in similar numbers. The issue is that 30 years ago they didn't diagnose it like they do now. That doesn't mean MORE kids have it now, they just are much better at seeing it.

Also, the definition has changed. A lot more kids qualify for the diagnosis now (being a spectrum) then used to.

Finally, it takes a LOT of work to get a diagnosis.

Ehhh I can see it from both sides only because my son was given a false diagnosis for a year. At the same time I feel it was my fault for not seeking a second opinion or asking for more tests.

No I do not believe for a minute that over diagnosis is the reason for the "rise" but honestly I don't think there is a rise, but better screening
